Bethlehem
Head coach: John Carlino
Last year’s record: 5-4
Playoff result: lost to Saratoga Springs in Class AA quarterfinal
Returning starters: Patrick Ryan (wide receiver/defensive back), Chris Ramundo (offensive line/defensive line), Alex Shudt (running back/outside linebacker), Ryan Cartwright (wide receiver/defensive back)
Graduated: David Montalvo (quarterback), Chris Harvey (wide receiver/defensive back), Ethan Sheraw (running back/outside linebacker)
Newcomers: Paul Kelly (offensive line/defensive line), Derek Martelle (quarterback/defensive back), Nick Gicewicz (running back/defensive end)
Outlook for season: Carlino said what the Eagles lack in size, they will make up for in athleticism.
“If we can stay healthy, we’ll be able to compete with any Class AA team,” said Carlino, who is taking over for Rick Leach this season. “We plan on putting all our athletes on the field on offense and defense to counter-balance teams that bring more size than us.”
Carlino said he has been emphasizing conditioning and special teams play this preseason to prepare Bethlehem to battle for one of the four Class AA playoff berths.
“We feel that will be the difference in a few close ball games where every Friday matters,” said Carlino.
