GREENWICH – Charlie Gartner’s overtime goal lifted Greenwich to a 3-2 victory over Stillwater Wednesday, Sept. 5, in a Wasaren League boys soccer game.
Grant Baker scored the tying goal for Stillwater (1-1 league, 3-1 overall) late in the second half, but Gartner broke free in the first overtime period to net the game winner.
Gartner got the Witches (2-0, 2-0) on the scoreboard first by picking up a loose ball and striking it past Stillwater goalkeeper Tim Buchal 18 minutes into the first half. Harry Rubenstein answered for Stillwater by converting a cross from Jake Zdonick, but Liam Kelleher scored on a penalty kick in the 31st minute to put Greenwich ahead 2-1.
Stillwater pressed hard over the first nine minutes of the second half before the game was stopped due to lightning. When it resumed, the Warriors picked up where they left off and continued applying pressure on Greenwich’s defense through Baker’s goal and beyond.
Stillwater had twice as many scoring opportunities (16-8) as Greenwich, but had difficulty finding the back of the net against Witches’ goalie Sam Whiting, who finished with 10 saves. Buchal stopped five shots for the Warriors.
