Non-league boys soccer: Voorheesville, Schalmont earn victories against Foothills Council teams

Two crossover games featuring Colonial and Foothills Council boys soccer teams went the way of the Colonial Council Saturday, Sept. 8.

Voorheesville handed Hudson Falls its first loss of the season with a 3-1 victory, while Schalmont edged Schuylerville 2-1 on Dylan Martin’s last-minute goal.

In a rematch of last year’s Section 2 Class B semifinals, Schuylerville got on the scoreboard late in the first half. Michael Lanfear drilled a free kick that hit off the crossbar, and Zach Saddlemire struck the rebound past Schalmont netminder Ryan Taylor for a 1-0 lead.

Schalmont played down a man in the second half after one of its players received a second yellow card and was sent off. That didn’t faze the Sabres, though. Ryan Edwards scored the equalizer on a penalty kick with less than five minutes left in regulation, and Martin headed in the go-ahead goal off Matt Horwedel’s corner kick with 31 seconds left.

Schuylerville goalkeeper Drew Phillips made eight saves in the loss.

Nik Heasley’s goal in the 12th minute gave Hudson Falls (4-1) a 1-0 lead, but Jack Ensslin tallied twice in the span of one minute midway through the first half to put Voorheesville (3-1) in the lead. Joey Saia added an insurance goal for the Blackbirds in the 72nd minute.

Goalkeeper Justin Fenton kept Hudson Falls in the game with nine saves.
