Boys soccer: Mayfield edges Greenwich in Mayfield Tournament

Mayfield scored two goals in the first half and held on for a 2-1 victory over Greenwich in its boys soccer tournament Saturday, Sept. 8.

Daniel Leach tallied 14 minutes into the game, and Josh Watson scored off Colbey Hime’s corner kick in the 32nd minute to give the Panthers the lead. Charlie Gartner got one goal back for the Witches before halftime, but Greenwich could not get the equalizer.

Mayfield goalkeeper Evan Lehr made four saves to pick up the win, while Greenwich netminder Sam Whiting stopped eight shots.

Greenwich was coming off a 2-1 Wasaren League overtime loss to Tamarac on Friday, Sept. 7. Christian O’Brien put the Witches in front with a goal off AJ Rymph’s assist, but Max Ali tallied from long distance to tie the game in the first half and did it again in overtime.

Whiting had seven saves for Greenwich, while Tamarac goalkeeper Tyler Nemjo stopped six shots.
