Suburban Council boys soccer: Shenendehowa defeats Averill Park; Niskayuna edges Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake

Shenendehowa pulled away in the second half for a 3-1 victory over Averill Park in a Suburban Council boys soccer game Saturday, Sept. 8.

Eric Makhatadze headed in a corner kick from Reggie Durden in the first half and repeated the process by heading in Ethan Brunell’s corner in the second half to put the Plainsmen ahead 2-0. Tristan Shellhamer scored off a feed from Brian Bourne to close the gap to 2-1, but Jason Breznak tallied on a rebound in the 69th minute to seal Shen’s victory.

Averill Park goalkeeper Eric Schuman stopped seven shots to keep the Warriors within striking distance.

Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Niskayuna pulled out a 1-0 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, and Shaker shut out Columbia 3-0.

George Tskalakos’ goal early in the first half proved to be the game winner for Niskayuna in its battle with Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Spartans’ goalie Sean Speck stopped several Silver Warrior shots, including one on a penalty kick that could have given Niskayuna a 2-0 lead.

Jack Acquario and Stephen Guidi provided the firepower for Shaker in its victory over Columbia. The duo were responsible for all three Blue Bison goals, with Acquario recording the hat trick. All three goals came within the first 22 minutes of the contest.
