Class A football: Jason McCarthy’s five touchdowns propel Ballston Spa past Gloversville in make-up game

BALLSTON SPA – Tailback Jason McCarthy rushed for 137 yards and five touchdowns to lead Ballston Spa to a 41-6 victory over Gloversville in a Class A football game Monday, Sept. 10.

McCarthy had touchdown runs of six, eight, 26, five and 36 yards to help the Scotties break away from the Huskies. Zach Washington had Ballston Spa’s other touchdown.

Ballston Spa (1-1) stuck to the ground to defeat Gloversville (0-2). The Scotties gained 333 rushing yards, while misfiring on their one passing attempt. By contrast, the Huskies had more success through the air, as they completed nine of their 15 pass attempts for 116 yards, while only gaining 76 yards on the ground.

Gloversville tailback Addonis Jeffries had a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to break up Ballston Spa’s shutout bid.

The game was originally scheduled to be played Friday, Sept. 7, but it was postponed to Sept. 10 after a Gloversville player and one of the team’s coaches became ill with the Coxsackievirus, a highly contagious disease that causes fever, headache, joint pain and rashes on the feet, hands and around the mouth.
