A quick burst of goals by Greenwich helped the Witches defeat Greenville 5-2 in the consolation game of the Mayfield Boys Soccer Tournament Saturday, Sept. 15.
Greenville (2-5) took a 1-0 lead on Timothy Biernacki scored off a lead pass from Bergen Criswell in the fifth minute. Greenwich (5-2) responded 40 seconds later on a goal by Liam Niesz off a rebound, and then Charlie Gartner scored twice in a five-minute time span to put the Witches ahead 3-1.
Criswell pulled the Spartans within a goal when he capitalized on a defensive mistake by Greenwich in the 22nd minute, but Gartner completed the natural hat trick off AJ Rymph’s assist before halftime to help the Witches regain a two-goal cushion.
Christian O’Brien added a second-half goal for Greenwich off a pass from Liam Kelleher.
Goalkeeper Sam Whiting had seven saves for Greenwich, while his Greenville counterpart, John Bergen, stopped six shots.
