Scenes from Suburban Council field hockey: Niskayuna edges Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in shootout

NISKAYUNA – Niskayuna moved back over the .500 mark after edging Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 1-0 in a penalty stroke shootout Thursday, Sept. 20, in a Suburban Council field hockey game.

The first half saw both teams applying offensive pressure, but neither side could put a shot on goal. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake carried the play over the final 15 minutes of regulation, but Niskayuna’s defense held firm to force overtime.

Niskayuna (4-3) had the better offensive chances in the two seven-on-seven overtime periods, including a shot that Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake goalie Rachel Kanppila dove to knock aside. Still, nothing got through either defense.

In the penalty stroke shootout, Niskayuna’s Lauren Moran and Claire Skunurski scored on their shots, and goalie Julia LeBlanc turned aside all four Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake shots she faced to secure the victory.
