A potential blowout turned into a shootout, as Amsterdam hung on for a 7-6 victory over Johnstown Friday, Sept. 28, in a Foothills Council boys soccer game.
The Rugged Rams (4-6) took a 7-1 lead on Raul Cruz’s goal in the 53rd minute before the Sir Bills (1-8) closed the game on a 5-0 run. Matt Boyle and Charlie Brown each scored a pair of goals during Johnstown’s furious rally.
Nick Covey had a hat trick in the first half, and Dwight Rose tallied twice to kickstart Amsterdam’s offense. Rose also contributed a pair of assists, and Kevin Vargas added a goal.
Johnstown goalkeeper Josh Hoyt notched seven saves.
Elsewhere in the Foothills Council, South Glens Falls (6-3-0 league, 7-5-0 overall) did all of its goal scoring in the second half to post a 3-0 victory over Hudson Falls. Andrew King, Michael Chagnon and Vincent Santilli tallied for the Bulldogs, and goalie Sebastian Maynard stopped five shots.
Justin Fenton had five saves between the posts for Hudson Falls (4-5-0, 6-6-0).
