Delaware Academy and Amsterdam picked up victories in the first round of Schoharie’s Kyle Sharpe boys soccer tournament Saturday, Sept. 29.
Amsterdam defeated Fonda-Fultonville 4-1, while Delaware Academy shut out Schoharie 3-0 to advance to the finals Saturday, Oct. 6.
Dwight Rose scored twice in the first half and added a goal in the second half to lead Amsterdam (5-6-0). Kevin Vargas also tallied for the Rugged Rams, and goalkeeper Ian Healy made four saves.
Tyler Sweet scored off a pass from Cody Hanson, and Mitch Araya stopped four shots in goal for Fonda-Fultonville (2-7-1).
Battling on muddy field conditions at Schoharie High School, Delaware Academy took a 1-0 lead on Paul Avila’s first-half goal. Both teams had scoring chances in the first 20 minutes of the second half before Michael Paoli tallied for Delaware Academy to put the visitors ahead 2-0.
Noah Fagnani had Schoharie’s best scoring chance when he ripped a shot that Delaware Academy goalie Logan Bryan caught. Christian Imperi then scored an insurance goal for Delaware Academy.
Schoharie netminder Bailey Smart had 13 saves.
In other non-league action, Glens Falls edged Galway 1-0 on Seth Davis’ goal with 10:30 left in the first half. Goalie Ben Difiore made four saves to pick up the shutout for the Indians (3-8-0).
Henry Flint stopped six shots for Galway (2-7-2).
