Colonial Council girls soccer: Holy Names avenges earlier loss against Schalmont with road win

ROTTERDAM – Two of the top four-ranked Class B girls soccer teams in New York State met for the second time this season.

When all was said and done, Academy of the Holy Names (No. 4) rallied for a 2-1 victory over top-ranked Schalmont Wednesday, Oct. 3, in a Colonial Council contest.

Unlike the first meeting between the two teams – won by Schalmont 4-1 on Sept. 2 (click here for the story and a photo gallery) – Holy Names did not back down after Schalmont took the lead on Ashley Cirilla’s unassisted goal early in the second half. Megan Marini scored the equalizer less than 11 minutes later off a pass from Ava Panto, and Panto notched the game winner off Marini’s assist with 16:46 remaining in regulation.

Holy Names goalkeeper Kathleen Harris stopped 10 shots, while Schalmont netminder Eden Messemer had 10 saves.
