WATERFORD – The Waterford-Halfmoon boys soccer team took over sole possession of first place in Division 2 of the Wasaren League with a 2-0 victory over Cambridge Wednesday, Oct. 3.
After 15 minutes of back-and-forth play, the Fordians (6-2-2 league, 14 points) grabbed the lead in the 16th minute when Tyler Galarneau scored amidst several Cambridge defenders. Hunter Guertin nearly made the score 2-0 a short time later when his free kick deflected straight down off the crossbar and landed on the goal line, but the ball stayed out of the net.
Cambridge (5-4-2, 12 points) created several scoring chances in the second half, but Waterford-Halfmoon’s defense prevented the Indians from pulling even. Jason Cordts tallied an insurance goal for the Fordians off a pass from Ty Plumley with eight minutes left in regulation.
Goalkeeper Bobby Valigorsky stopped six shots to earn the shutout for Waterford-Halfmoon. Parker Robinson made nine saves between the posts for Cambridge.
