Shaker cross country sweeps team titles at Grout Run

SCHENECTADY – How “sweep” it was for the Shaker boys and girls cross country teams at this year’s Grout Run Saturday, Oct. 6, at Schenectady’s Central Park.

The Shaker girls fended off Bethlehem 34-42 for the Varsity Division I championship, while the Shaker boys eased past Schenectady 26-54 in the Varsity Division II race.

“I’m really proud of them. They did really well,” said Shaker girls cross country coach Marbry Gansle.

Grout Run-21Shaker’s young runners were the catalyst for its victory in the Varsity Girls Division I race. Seventh-grader Leoni Griffin passed her teammate, eighth-grader Kaleigh Higgins, near the top of the final downhill and won the 2.75-mile race with a time of 15:56.74. Higgins was second with a time of 16:00.04.

“I thought we both did really well,” said Griffin, who was second to Higgins at the John Killian Invitational the previous week in South Glens Falls. “We push each other.”

Juniors Olivia Miles (16:58.13) and Tori Mariano (17:04.79) placed ninth and 10th for Shaker, respectively, to help the Blue Bison edge Bethlehem by eight points in the team standings. Freshman Madelyn Miles sealed Shaker’s victory with a 12th-place finish in a time of 17:12.15.

Grout Run-24Like Shaker, Bethlehem had four runners in the top 10. Junior Gillian Roeder led the Lady Eagles with a third-place finish in a time of 16:18.95. Roeder was quickly followed by junior Rachel Hodge (fifth place, 16:42.76), eighth-grader Rylee Davis (sixth, 16:43.24) and junior Emily Smith (eighth, 16:45.66).

Shaker’s boys team dominated the Varsity Division II race. Five Blue Bison placed in the top 10, led by overall champion TJ Randall, who covered the course with a time of 14:07.34.

“Around the mile mark was when I decided I could go faster,” said Randall, who pulled away for a 25-second victory over runner-up Isaac Menis of Schenectady.

Grout Run-40Sophomore Francisco Mendonca placed third with a time of 14:33.40 for Shaker. Junior Christopher Garretson was sixth with a time of 14:52.16, while sophomore Zack Diehl finished seventh with a time of 14:54.10. Sophomore Daniel Pavelec (ninth place, 15:13.03) rounded out Shaker’s top five.

“I really hope it helps their confidence because I don’t think they think that well of themselves as runners,” said Shaker boys cross country coach Ed Springstead.

Washingtonville (Section 9) placed seven runners in the top 10 to win the Varsity Boys Division I title, while Broadalbin-Perth claimed the Varsity Boys C division title by seven points over Stillwater, 64-71.

Grout Run-29Broadalbin-Perth’s pack proved to be the difference in the Varsity Boys C division. Senior Wyatt Couperus (15:21.56) was the lone Patriot to crack the top 10 with an eighth-place finish, but four B-P runners crossed the finish line between 13th and 17th place to take the team title.

“This is what I’ve been trying to get them to understand – this is a team effort,” said Broadalbin-Perth coach Jeff Richards. “I’m ecstatic. This is what I’ve wanted to see them do.”

Daniel Dylong (13th place, 15:37.47), Antonio Zevola (15th, 15:42.06), Micah Smith (16th, 15:42.75) and Preston Hadley (17th, 15:43.72) rounded out Broadalbin-Perth’s top five.

Grout Run-12North Warren-Johnsburg’s Brandon Olden was the Varsity Boys C division individual champion. The senior finished with a winning time of 14:06.61, more than 15 seconds ahead of Duaneburg junior Andrew Drescher.

“It’s always good to get the win, but now that it’s finished, I wish I had gone faster,” said Olden.

Greenwich took three of the top four places to win the Varsity Girls Division II team title with 24 points, 39 points ahead of runner-up Washingtonville. Freshman Nina Sgambelluri pulled away from teammate Brynne Wright to take top individual honors with a time of 15:46.76. Wright was second with a time of 15:54.60, and Colonie’s Kathryn Tenney finished third with a time of 16:23.84.

“Brynne Wright and I wanted to work together today,” said Sgambelluri. “We just pushed each other.”

Duaneburg won the Varsity Girls C division team title with 55 points, while Greenville took second place with 76 points. Mayfield’s Madison Relyea won the individual title with a time of 16:01.83, more than six seconds ahead of Duanesburg’s Elaine Atanasova.

“I really like to be out front at the start of the race,” said Relyea.
