Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs: Catholic Central, Schoharie among teams advancing past preliminary round

No. 17 Catholic Central and No. 13 Schoharie were among six teams advancing through the preliminary round of the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Lucas Kania had a hat trick to lead Catholic Central (5-12-0) to a 7-1 victory over No. 16 Saratoga Central Catholic. Liam McDonald contributed a pair of goals, and Joe Piperata added a goal and two assists for the Crusaders, who will meet top-seeded Lake George Thursday, Oct. 18.

Luke Apy tallied for Spa Catholic (5-11-1), and goalkeeper Preston Famiglietti made six saves.

Schoharie (8-6-2) dominated time of possession against No. 19 Granville (3-11-0), but came away with a 1-0 victory thanks in large part to Golden Horde goalie Nick O’Brien, who made 18 saves. Noah Fagnani scored off a pass from Skyler Jankowski in the 70th minute to give the Indians their lone goal.

Schoharie travels to No. 3 Stillwater Thursday for an opening round contest.

Elsewhere in Class C, No. 22 Canajoharie upended No. 11 Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Duanesburg 1-0 on Cody Haig’s overtime goal. The Cougars (2-12-2) battle No. 6 Greenwich in the next round.

No. 18 Berlin (4-13-0) also pulled off an upset, as the Mountaineers defeated No. 15 Middleburgh 1-0. Connor Votra scored off a corner kick in the first half for Berlin, and goalie Malik Plouffe stopped nine shots. The Mountaineers advance to play No. 2 Maple Hill Thursday.

No. 12 Fort Plain (10-5-1) edged No. 21 Hoosic Valley 1-0 on Ethan Spaulding’s first-half tally. The Toppers take on No. 5 Waterford-Halfmoon Thursday.

No. 13 Mekeel Christian Academy (7-9-0) shut down No. 20 Hoosick Falls 3-0 Tuesday. Len’s Lima struck for a pair of goals, and Daniel McCarty added another for the Lions, who travel to No. 4 Mayfield Thursday.
