Section 2 Class C boys soccer round-up: Greenwich downs Canajoharie; Waterford-Halfmoon advances on penalty kicks

The quarterfinal field is set in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs following Thursday’s opening round.

No. 6 Greenwich (9-6-2) dispatched No. 22 Canajoharie 8-2 in Greenwich. The Cougars (2-14-2) got on the scoreboard first on Walfre Vasquez’s goal three minutes into the first half, but the Witches scored eight unanswered goals to end Canajoharie’s upset bid.

Charlie Gartner recorded a hat trick, and Liam Kelleher contributed a goal and an assist for Greenwich. AJ Rymph, Bill Bink, Hunter Dixson and Connor Smith also tallied for the Witches.

Jared Bentz had seven saves in goal for Canajoharie, and he added a goal on a penalty kick late in the second half.

Meanwhile, No. 5 Waterford-Halfmoon had all it could handle against No. 12 Fort Plain (10-5-2). The teams played to a 2-2 tie through regulation and overtime, with the Fordians prevailing 4-2 on penalty kicks.

Nate Powell tallied twice in regulation for Waterford-Halfmoon (10-4-3), including the tying goal with approximately two minutes left in the second half. Ethan Schoch and Jaxson Yacowenia scored Fort Plain’s goals.

Elsewhere in Class C, No. 7 Doane Stuart (9-5-1) edged No. 10 Cambridge 1-0 on Joey DiPreta’s goal in the second half. The Thunderchickens face No. 2 Maple Hill (14-2-1) in the quarterfinals after the Wildcats defeated No. 18 Berlin 2-0.

Top-seeded Lake George (17-0-0) kept its perfect record intact by eliminating No. 17 Catholic Central 4-0. Brothers Colin and Alex Leonelli each scored a goal for the Warriors. Lake George meets No. 8 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons Monday (click here for details on NDBG’s 4-0 victory over No. 9 Bolton-Warrensburg).

No. 4 Mayfield (14-3-0) defeated No. 13 Mekeel Christian Academy 6-0. Six different players scored goals for the Panthers, who will host Waterford-Halfmoon Monday in the quarterfinals.

No. 3 Stillwater (13-4-0) shut out No. 14 Schoharie 5-0. Grant Baker led a balanced attack with two goals.
