Section 2 Class C girls soccer playoffs: Lake George tested by Waterford-Halfmoon; Stillwater rolls

No. 2 seed Lake George fended off No. 15 Waterford-Halfmoon 3-1 Saturday, Oct. 20, in the opening round of the Section 2 Class C girls soccer tournament.

Stephanie Dickinson-Frevola scored off a pass from Sarah Kohls 15:02 into the first half to give the Lady Warriors a 1-0 lead. However, Waterford-Halfmoon goalkeeper Caer Burns stopped several shots after that to keep the Fordians close at halftime.

Rebecca Kohls doubled Lake George’s lead less than five minutes into the second half off another Sarah Kohls assist. Annelise Rebel tallied less than a minute later to get Waterford-Halfmoon on the scoreboard, but Gabby Marchello provided an insurance goal at 65:14 to give Lake George some breathing room.

Burns finished with 19 saves to keep Waterford-Halfmoon close to Lake George, which entered the contest as the No. 3-ranked Class C girls soccer team in New York State.

Elsewhere in Class C, top-seeded Stillwater and third-seeded Schoharie cruised in their opening round games. Stillwater topped No. 16 Granville 9-0, while Schoharie downed No. 14 Rensselaer 12-0.

Brooke Pickett had three goals and two assists to lead Stillwater, the state’s top-ranked Class C squad. Teya Staie also had a hat trick, and Keelyn Peacock contributed a goal and two assists.

Goalie Lyndsy Hilder made 19 saves for Granville.

Meghan Krohn paced Schoharie’s potent offense with five goals and two assists against Rensselaer, while Katie Krohn chipped in with two goals and three assists. Haley Drinon tallied twice and added an assist.

Jordan VanWie stopped 19 shots on goal for Rensselaer.

No. 4 Hoosic Valley got past No. 13 Middleburgh 1-0 on Samantha Lanoue’s first-half goal. Hoosic Valley meets No. 12 Mayfield in the quarterfinals after Mayfield upset No. 5 Chatham 2-1 in overtime. Lindsey Hampton scored one goal and assisted on Taryn Lafontaine’s tally for Mayfield. Brook-Lyn Doyle scored Chatham’s goal.

Sky Haynes tallied twice as No. 11 Hoosick Falls upended No. 6 Canajoharie 2-1. Taya Yacobucci scored a goal for Canajoharie.

No. 7 Cambridge and No. 8 Maple Hill also advanced to the quarterfinals with opening round wins. Vanessa Evans’ goal lifted Cambridge past No. 10 Greenwich 1-0, while goals by Meghan Bennett and Mariella Hirschoff led Maple Hill past No. 9 Bolton/Warrensburg 2-1 in overtime. Aubrey Ranous tallied for B/W.
