Section 2 girls volleyball tournament: Semifinal match-ups are set for Class AA and Class A

Class AA and Class A held their quarterfinal matches Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Section 2 girls volleyball playoffs.

The top four seeds advanced in Class AA, though two of the matches were close. No. 4 Columbia edged No. 5 Guilderland 3-2, while No. 3 Niskayuna got past No. 6 Bethlehem 3-1.

Columbia and Guilderland split the first four games before the Blue Devils pulled out a 25-23 victory in the fifth game. Chesney Romer had 20 kills for Columbia in the victory.

Niskayuna won the first two games of its playoff against Bethlehem 25-20 and 25-15. The Lady Eagles took the third game 25-18 before the Silver Warriors closed the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth game. Molly Mason and Katie Atchinson each had four service aces for Niskayuna.

In the other two Class AA quarterfinals, top-seeded Shenendehowa swept No. 8 Shaker 3-0, and No. 2 Ballston Spa defeated No. 7 Saratoga Springs 3-0. Shen faces Columbia in one semifinal Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 5 p.m. at Rensselaer High School, with Ballston Spa and Niskayuna meeting in the other semifinal at 7 p.m.

In Class A, No. 5 Mohonasen needed all five games to defeat No. 4 Averill Park and advance to the semifinals. The Mighty Warriors dropped the first game 25-17, but came back to win the next two games 25-19 and 25-12. Averill Park rallied to win the fourth game 25-14 before Mohonasen closed out the match with a 25-17 victory in the fifth game.

Mohonasen faces top-seeded Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in one Class A semifinal Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 5 p.m. at Broadablin-Perth High School. The other semifinal pits two Foothills Council teams against each other, as No. 2 South Glens Falls takes on No. 3 Queensbury. South Glens Falls swept No. 7 Amsterdam 3-0 in their quarterfinal contest, while Queensbury did the same to No. 6 Gloversville.
