Scenes from Section 2 boys soccer playoffs: CBA wins first Class AA title in school history by edging Niskayuna

COLONIE – Top-seeded Christian Brothers Academy claimed its first Section 2 Class AA boys soccer title in the school’s history by defeating No. 7 Niskayuna 2-1 in the championship game Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Colonie Central High School.

Eli D’Onofrio scored on a penalty kick midway through the first half to give the Brothers a 1-0 lead. Jack Mendrysa then tallied off a pass from Keegan Vedder for what proved to be the game winner for CBA.

Niskayuna – which upset No. 2 Albany and advanced past No. 3 Bethlehem on penalty kicks to reach the final – did not give up without a fight. Late in the second half, Keenan Duggal struck a shot for the Silver Warriors that a CBA defender attempted to clear, but wound up bouncing off another CBA player into the net for an own goal.  Time ran out on Niskayuna before it could get the equalizer.

CBA will play for its first regional title when it faces Section 3 champion Baker Saturday, Nov. 3, at Liverpool High School outside Syracuse.
