Boys soccer regionals: Schalmont advances on penalty kicks; Queensbury defeats Fulton

Schalmont (Class B) and Queensbury (Class A) will represent Section 2 at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Tournament this weekend in Middletown after they won regional titles Saturday, Nov. 3.

Schalmont tied Section 7’s Peru 2-2 in their regional, but punched its ticket to the state semifinals by edging Peru 4-3 in penalty kicks. Jared Smith hit the go-ahead penalty kick for the Sabres, and goalkeeper Ryan Taylor made a diving block with his feet on Tanner Spear’s attempt to end the session.

Peru scored twice in the first 14 minutes to take an early lead on Schalmont, but Ryan Edwards tallied with less than 17 minutes left in the first half to trim the deficit to 2-1. Edwards then scored on a direct kick midway through the second half to tie the score at 2-2.

Taylor made seven saves during regulation and overtime, and then stopped two of the five shots he faced in penalty kicks to help Schalmont reach the state semifinals. Noah Lederman scored twice for Peru, and goalie Michael McBride had 12 saves.

Schalmont meets Section 3 champion Westhill in the state semifinals Saturday, Nov. 10, at Middletown High School.

Queensbury knocked off Section 3’s Fulton 2-1 in the Class A regional final Nov. 3. Brendan Duffy scored the game-winning goal with 17 seconds left in regulation off a pass from Aidan Jordi-Donnelly for the Spartans, who entered the game as the state’s top-ranked team.

The contest was scoreless until the 54-minute mark when Cameron Stuart fed Colin Bennett for a goal to give Fulton a 1-0 lead. Queensbury’s Alex Roca tied the score at 1-1 when his 25-yard shot caromed off one goalpost and into the net.

The Spartans face Section 1 champion Somers in Saturday’s semifinal at Middletown High School.

In other regional finals, Class AA representative Christian Brothers Academy dropped a 1-0 decision to Section 3’s Baldwinsville on an own goal, and Class D champion Fort Ann lost to Section 9’s Mount Academy 2-0.
