Section 2 will be well represented at this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball Championships at Cool Insuring Arena.
All five Sectional representatives won their regional finals Saturday, Nov. 10, to qualify for the state tournament, which takes place Nov. 17 and 18 in Glens Falls.
Class AA champion Shenendehowa had the toughest challenge of regionals, as it needed four sets to defeat Section 3 champion Baldwinsville at Gloversville High School. The Plainswomen won the first two sets 27-25 and 25-22 before the Bees took the third set 25-22. Shen and Baldwinsville continued to battle back and forth before the Plainswomen closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.
Ashley Lavigne led Shen with 41 service points, while Maddy Frutchey, Katie Greene and Rose Talty all contributed 10 kills to hand Baldwinsville its first loss of the season.
Class A champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake cruised into the state tournament with a 25-1, 25-14, 25-7 victory over Section 10 representative Massena. Carlie Rzeszotarski notched 10 kills, and Claire Isaksen chipped in with 36 assists for the Lady Spartans, who clinched their 17th consecutive trip to states.
Broadalbin-Perth won the Class B regional with a 25-9, 25-16, 25-14 victory over Section 10’s Ogdensburg Free Academy, while Voorheesville handled Canton 25-9, 25-10, 26-28, 25-10 in the Class C regional. Marie Julian had 12 kills and 22 service points for Voorheesville, including nine aces. Victoria Konicki contributed 10 kills and four blocks, and Jada Akers added 17 service points, including five aces.
Mayfield swept Section 10’s Chateaugay 25-10, 25-11, 25-18 in the Class D regional final. Mikayla Myers and Samantha Kent each had nine kills for the Panthers.
