Bethlehem 200-yard freestyle relay places second at New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships

ITHACA – Bethlehem’s 200-yard freestyle relay team earned a second-place finish at the New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, Nov. 17, at Ithaca College.

Maggie Hartman, Anna Bernasconi, Megan Novak and Sydney Sorbello finished with an All-American Consideration time of 1:37.08 in Saturday’s championship finals to place second to the team from Sleepy Hollow-Hastings-Edgemont-Irvington (Section 1), which took the state and Federation titles with a time of 1:35.56. Earlier in the day, Bethlehem’s 200-yard medley relay team of Sorbello, Hartman, Novak and Ella Kaback took sixth place with a time of 1:48.43.

Fonda-Johnstown’s Alayna Gray was the top individual from Section 2 at the state meet. The junior placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with an All-American Consideration time of 23.48 seconds and finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.48 seconds. Gray had the fastest preliminary time in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 23.39 seconds.

Sorbello also made two championship finals in her individual events. The junior was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.85 seconds and placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.03 seconds. Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Gillian Burch added an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.91.

Shenendehowa placed eighth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.25 and finished 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:35.94.
