State football semifinals: Glens Falls pulls away from Marlboro, while Shaker and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake lose close contests

MIDDLETOWN – Glens Falls punched its ticket to the Carrier Dome after defeating Marlboro (Section 9) 48-28 in the Class B state football semifinals Saturday, Nov. 17, at Middletown High School.

The Indians (11-1) scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to break open a close game and advance to next weekend’s championship game against Batavia (Section 5) in Syracuse.

Tailback Aalijah Sampson got Glens Falls on the scoreboard with a 55-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Ameer Williams capped Marlboro’s ensuing drive with a 7-yard scoring run to tie the score at 7-7, but a 21-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Girard III to David Barclay and Sampson’s 32-yard scoring scamper in the second quarter put the Indians ahead to stay.

Williams got Marlboro back in the game with a 17-yard touchdown run later in the second quarter. However, Girard found Hogan Fox for a 14-yard scoring strike before halftime to put Glens Falls ahead 28-14.

After Williams scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter for Marlboro, Girard threw a short pass to Sampson, who then eluded several tacklers on his way for an 85-yard touchdown reception. A short time later, Girard recovered a Marlboro fumble and raced 25 yards for another six points to put Glens Falls in complete control.

Sampson rushed for 144 yards, caught three passes for 98 yards and scored a total of four touchdowns to lead Glens Falls’ offense. Girard completed 13 of 23 passes for 300 yards and gained another 28 yards on the ground.

Glens Falls faces off against Batavia Saturday, Nov. 24, at noon at the Carrier Dome.

Trailing Cornwall 21-14 early in the fourth quarter, BH-BL quarterback Darien LaPietro found Rece Gobel for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Cornwall blocked the extra point kick to maintain a one-point lead and stalled a pair of BH-BL drives to pull out the victory.

Tailback Vincent Daviero carried the ball 29 times for 185 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns for the Spartans, who finished the season with a 9-2 record. Amin Woods had a pair of touchdown runs for Cornwall, including the go-ahead score in the third quarter.

Shaker (10-1) led 19-13 at halftime on quarterback Connor McHugh’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Meadows in the final minute of the second quarter, but Mac Coughlin’s 31-yard scoring strike to Halim Dixon-King and Joey Celentano’s extra point kick put New Rochelle in front to stay. Jordan Forrest added a 65-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for insurance.

Ravion Burt led Shaker’s offense with 144 yards on 13 carries, while Logan Souza contributed 91 yards and a touchdown.
