Cross country: Saratoga Springs, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake qualify for Nike Team Nationals

WAPPINGERS FALLS – The Saratoga Springs girls and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys cross country teams punched their tickets to this year’s Nike Team Nationals with strong performances at the New York Regionals Saturday, Nov. 24, at Bowdoin Park.

Racing as Kinetic, Saratoga Springs edged Manlius XC 63-65 to win the girls championship division and earn one of two automatic berths to the national meet, held in Portland, Oregon. Kelsey Chmiel led Saratoga with a third-place finish in a time of 18:06.3, while Ella Kurto (11th place, 18:40.8), McKinley Wheeler (24th place, 19:30.0) and Emily Bush (25th place, 19:34.7) contributed top-25 times.

Shenendehowa was fifth in the team standings with 212 points, while Niskayuna finished eighth with 248 points. Bethlehem placed 16th out of the 19 teams competing at regionals with 350 points.

Running as Deluge XC, the BH-BL boys placed second to Manlius XC to earn their trip to the Nike Team Nationals. Manlius placed three runners in the top five won with 28 points, while BH-BL finished with 78 points.

Tyler Berg led BH-BL with a seventh-place finish in a time of 16:07.0. Aidan Gillooley was 15th with a time of 16:31.0, while Evan Brennan placed 19th with a time of 16:37.5.

Saratoga’s Shea Weilbaker earned an individual berth to the Nike Team Nationals after placing second in the boys championship division with a time of 15:51.6, six-tenths of a second behind individual champion Parker Stokes II. As a team, Saratoga was sixth with 201 points.

Shenendehowa finished eighth in the boys team standings with 301 points, while Guilderland placed 10th with 366 points. Shaker, Bethlehem and Columbia also competed in the boys championship division.

The Nike Team Nationals take place Saturday, Dec. 1, at Glendover Golf Course near Portland, Ore.
