Bethlehem continues to lead the way in the Capital District High School Hockey League following a 6-3 victory over Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany Saturday, Dec. 8, at Union College.
It was the third consecutive 6-3 victory by the Eagles (3-0-0 league, 6-0-0 overall) and the fifth time they have tallied at least six times in a game. The only team to hold Bethlehem under six goals was West Genesee (Section 3) in a game won by the Eagles 3-1.
Michael Bievenue continued his torrid start for Bethlehem by factoring into all six goals the Eagles scored against Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany. The junior forward notched four goals and assisted on the other two to finish with a six-point evening. For the season, Bievenue has 12 goals and 10 assists for a CDHSHL-best 22 points.
Theo Angelopoulos tallied twice for Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany (1-1-0, 2-1-0), which suffered its first league loss.
One team showing that it might have the firepower to match Bethlehem is Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa, which defeated Adirondack 11-5 Saturday to improve its record to 1-1-0 in the CDHSHL and 3-1-0 overall. Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa has now scored 31 goals in only four games, while Bethlehem has 39 goals in six contests. However, it should be noted that Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany edged Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa 3-2 the night before the Adirondack game.
Elsewhere in the CDHSHL, Christian Brothers Academy made its first league game of the season count with a 5-3 victory over LaSalle Saturday. Five different players scored goals for the Brothers (1-0-0, 2-1-1) – Miles Desmarais, Ryan Dollar, Ryan McMahon, Luke Pezzano and Dylan Van Epps. Jack O’Bryan, Nic Pauley and Matt Powers tallied for the Cadets (0-1-0, 1-1-1).
Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs split their two games at last weekend’s Don Kauth Memorial Tournament. The Plainsmen (2-2-0) defeated Mamaroneck (Section 1) 4-3 Friday before losing to Williamsville North (Section 6) 6-1. Saratoga (3-1-0) followed a similar pattern, defeating Mamaroneck 4-2 Saturday and losing to Williamsville North 5-0 Sunday. Both teams begin league play Wednesday, Dec. 12, with Saratoga facing CBA and Shen playing LaSalle.
The North Country teams – Queensbury and Adirondack – took turns playing Penfield (Section 5) last weekend. Adirondack (0-1-0, 0-3-1) lost to Penfield 13-3 Friday, while Queensbury (1-1-0, 2-1-0) defeated the suburban Rochester squad 4-2 Saturday.
