West Genesee (Section 3) rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 49-48 overtime victory over Shenendehowa in the finals of the Hoops for the Hospital boys basketball tournament Friday, Dec. 28, at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
The Plainsmen used an 18-7 run in the second quarter to help build a 37-23 lead going into the final period. However, West Genesee outscored Shen 20-6 in the last eight minutes to force overtime.
Shen’s Jake Reinisch led all scorers with 20 points, while two West Genesee players combined to score 28 points.
Shen advanced to the finals with a 50-36 victory over Fairport (Section 5) Thursday, Dec. 27. James Altenburger netted 15 points, while Reinisch and Lucas Seyoum each added 11 points for the Plainsmen, who sealed the victory with an 18-9 run in the fourth quarter.
At the Woodward Tournament in Northville, Mayfield surged past the hosts 60-49 to win the title. The Panthers outscored the Falcons 15-4 in the second quarter to take control.
Tournament MVP Garrett Delaney poured in 18 points, and Evan Lehr contributed 12 points for Mayfield. Nate Reidell scored 14 points for Northville, while T.J. Wadsworth, Jason Ellsworth and Daniel VanNostrand all added 11 points.
Greenville pulled away for a 59-42 victory over Berne-Knox-Westerlo in the finals of BKW’s home tournament. Damien Fiducia led the Spartans with 21 points, and Keenan Muholland chipped in with 14 points. Zeke Pulliam had nine points for BKW.
In the BKW Tournament’s consolation game, Tamarac routed Hawthorne Valley 83-35. Anthony Ciampolillo racked up 22 points, and Bo Catherwood scored all 20 of his points in the second half for the Bengals.
