Notre Dame of Utica fended off a late rally to defeat Mohonasen 40-37 in the opening round of the inaugural Mohonasen Holiday Classic girls basketball tournament Friday, Dec. 28.
Notre Dame outscored Mohonasen 11-5 in the second quarter to build a 20-14 halftime lead. The Mighty Warriors closed the gap to one possession several times in the fourth quarter before running out of time.
Breanna Lott netted 16 points for Mohonasen, which meets Mekeel Christian Academy in the consolation round Saturday, Dec. 29. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake edged Mekeel Christian 43-41 in the other opening round game to advance to Saturday’s final against Notre Dame.
At the Maple Hill Holiday Hoopfest, Maple Hill pulled away early for a 57-38 victory over Middleburgh in the opening round. The Wildcats led 25-13 after the first quarter, and they never looked back.
Lauryn Smith led a balanced Maple Hill attack with 12 points. Stacia Coyne contributed 11 points and nine rebounds, and Natasha Strock added 10 points for the Wildcats. Kelsey Terrell had 18 points for Middleburgh.
Maple Hill meets Hoosic Valley in Saturday’s final after the Lady Indians defeated Watervliet 40-35.
