Section 2 holiday wrestling tournament recap: Queensbury wins its own tourney, while Granville places second in Vermont

Three wrestlers won their weight classes to lead Queensbury to a first-place finish at its own holiday tournament Friday, Dec. 28.

Ryan Sleezer (113 pounds), Trevor Robbins (126) and Luke Little (145) earned individual titles for the Spartans, who cruised to the team championship with 218.5 points. Ryan defeated his identical twin brother, Dylan, 7-5 in the finals, while Robbins posted the same score in defeating Vincent Santilli of South Glens Falls. Little pinned Corinth’s Sam Tromblee 48 seconds into the second period of their championship bout.

Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George also had three individual champions, as heavyweights Cody York (182 pounds, Cameron Duers (195) and William Mitcham (285) won in the finals. York needed 14 seconds to pin Corinth’s Ray Procter, while Duers scored a late pin to defeat Queensbury’s Seth Guay. Mitcham edged New Hartford’s Austin Bullock 2-0 to win his championship match.

Corinth’s Devlin Blanchard (99 pounds) and Alec Richards (138) came away with individual titles, as did Hudson Falls’ Chris Petteys (106), South High’s Connor Melton (120), Albany Academy’s Drew Bogdan (160) and Cobleskill-Richmondville’s Ethan Cooper (170).

In other holiday wrestling tournament action, Granville crossed the border into Vermont and placed second at the Hubie Wagner Invitational in Middlebury Dec. 28. The Golden Horde finished with 201 points, 2.5 points behind team champion Bow, NH.

Andrew Reed (152 pounds), David Regimbald (195) and Jonathan Hermance (220) won their weight classes for Granville on first-period pins. Brent Perry (106), Thomas McMahon (126) and Carlos Medrano-Garcia (132) reached the championship finals before losing.

Niskayuna won the Schenectady County Duals Dec. 28 with a 4-0 record. Mohonasen finished second with a 3-1 mark, and Duanesburg placed third with a 2-2 record. Schalmont (1-3) and Schenectady (0-4) rounded out the field.

Four Section 2 teams competed at the Mountain Duals Dec. 28 in Dolgeville. Ballston Spa had the best record of the four teams with a 4-3 mark, while Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Amsterdam split their eight matches. Averill Park posted a 3-5 record.

Lansingburgh won two of its five matches at the Hawkeye Duals Saturday, Dec. 29, in Cooperstown.
