Non-league boys basketball: Mohonasen cruises past Guilderland in rivalry game

Mohonasen and Guilderland used to be neighboring Suburban Council rivals until Mohonasen moved to the Colonial Council this season.

The boys basketball teams from the two schools kept their rivalry going this season, with Mohonasen getting the better of Guilderland 77-41 Saturday, Jan. 5.

Guilderland kept the game close through the first quarter, but Mohonasen used a 22-7 run in the second quarter to build a 37-17 halftime lead. The Mighty Warriors continued their onslaught with a 24-point third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Duncan Tallman sank six three-pointers on his way to a 28-point afternoon for Mohonasen. Chase Monroe contributed 17 points, while Nicholas Richmond, Drew Coelho and Shawn Gillisslee all added eight points.

Billy Lia led Guilderland with 14 points.

In other non-league basketball action, a 33-point third quarter helped Albany Academy pull away for an 87-64 victory over Knox. Rob Brown had 23 points, while August Mahoney contributed 17 points for the Cadets.

Watervliet defeated Fieldston 65-57 in a game played at Albany Academy. Messiah Mallory poured in 31 points for the Cannoneers, while Derrick Beason chipped in with 14 points.

Mekeel Christian Academy fended off Bishop Kearney (Section 5) 66-59 in Rochester. Mekeel built a 57-39 lead before Bishop Kearney rallied in the fourth quarter. Ozzie DeJesus dominated down low for the Lions with 31 points, while Alex Barnhill contributed 22 points.

Oppenheim-Ephretah/St. Johnsville outscored Hoosic Valley 32-18 over the second and third quarters on its way to a 54-38 victory. Tyler Leon netted 16 points, and Zach Mosher added 12 points for the Wolfpack. Derek Eddy and CJ Bassett each scored 11 points for the Indians.
