CDHSHL: Queensbury tops Capital District, despite 51 saves by Philip Ryan

Queensbury struck four times in the first period on its way to a 5-1 victory over the Capital District Jets Wednesday, Jan. 30, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Glens Falls Recreational Center.

Jimmy Fitzgerald, Casey Moulthrop and Jack Randall tallied within the first five minutes of the game to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Capital District goalie Philip Ryan did what he could to keep the Jets in the contest by making 51 saves, but the offense didn’t come around until the third period, when it generated 10 of the 24 total shots on goal they had.

Mason Wildermuth added a goal and two assists for Queensbury (6-3-1 league, 10-5-1 overall), while Randall and Trevor Vogel each had a goal and an assist. Robert Doyle tallied in the third period for Capital District (0-13-0, 0-17-0).

Elsewhere in the CDHSHL, Saratoga Springs nipped Shenendehowa 3-2 at Weibel Avenue Rink. The Blue Streaks (8-3-0, 12-4-0) built a 3-1 lead through the first two periods on goals by Will Detora, Michael Montague and Devon Wormley, and Saratoga’s defense fended off Shen’s comeback bid in the third period.

Tyler Sullivan notched both of Shen’s goals, and goalie Kent Leighton stopped 30 shots. The Plainsmen’s record slipped to 6-3-0 and 10-5-1 for the season.

CDHSHL leader Bethlehem (10-2-0, 15-2-0) struck for three goals in the third period to pull out a 4-1 victory over LaSalle (5-8-0, 6-10-1) at Hudson Valley Community College. Michael Bievenue added to his league-leading goal total with two markers, and defenseman Jonathan Thibodeau contributed three assists to help the Eagles maintain their two-point lead over second-place Queensbury heading into their Friday contest against third-place Albany Academy. Bievenue now has 33 goals this season.

Goalie Michael Kurdziolek stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced for Bethlehem.

Albany Academy (9-2-0, 11-3-0) kept pace with the Bethlehem and Queensbury by defeating Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany 4-1 at the Albany Academy Fieldhouse. Sam Koenig, William Lenkowitz, Connor Momrow and Dan Moshier tallied for the Cadets, and goalie Dan Guy had 19 saves.

Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany goalie Tony Cotugno recorded his 1,000th career save in the game. The Mohawks’ record dropped to 4-6-1 and 5-10-1.
