RENSSELAER – The Maple Hill girls basketball team jumped out to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter and fended off several Rensselaer rallies to defeat the Rams 56-45 on Senior Night Friday, Feb. 8.

The victory capped an undefeated league season for Maple Hill. The Wildcats now await their seeding for the Section 2 Class C tournament, which will be determined next week.

“I’ve seen [the top contenders] play, and especially in girls basketball, if one team gets hot, that’s the way it goes,” said Maple Hill head coach Seth Hendrick.

Renssealer was hoping to upend Maple Hill, but the Rams never got the deficit below nine points the rest of the night.

“We couldn’t put the ball in the hoop early on, but they kept working hard” said Rensselaer head coach Kristin Alonzo.

Maple Hill used a balanced attack to defeat Rensselaer. Stacia Coyne (13 points) and Paige Bleau (12 points) each hit three shots from beyond the three-point line to lead the Wildcats, while Callie Haller and Jenna Hoffman contributed eight points apiece.

“We have shooters out there,” said Hendrick. “All of them can shoot the three. They’re an unselfish team.”

Eighth-grader Mechalle Cancer netted 16 points, and senior Navia Bynum added 14 points for Rensselaer.
