Section 2 Nordic skiing: Madison Relyea leads Mayfield to girls title; Queensbury dominates boys race

Madison Relyea led Mayfield to the girls team title at the Section 2 Nordic Skiing Championships Thursdsay, Feb. 14, at Gore Mountain.

Relyea, who qualified for junior nationals earlier this season, finished with a time of 24:33.2 to lead the Panthers, who edged Queensbury 12-17 for first place. Fianna Halloran (fourth place, 27:50.6) and Kira Williams (seventh, 29:52.3) rounded out Mayfield’s top three.

Bailey Gengel led Queensbury with a second-place finish in a time of 25:24.2. Hadley-Luzerne’s Katrin Schreiner finished third with a time of 27:00.7.

On the boys’ side, Queensbury had three of the top five finishers as it pulled away from the rest of the pack. Lucas Jenkin won the individual title for the Spartans with a time of 34:56.7, while Aidan Rowley (third place, 35:10.5) and Nick Logan (fifth, 36:17.1) turned in strong performances.

Queensbury earned the boys team title with nine points, while Lake George placed second with 36 points.

The top performers from Sectionals advance to the state championships Feb. 25 and 26 at Gore Mountain.
