Scenes from Section 2 boys swimming: Albany Academy hangs on to win Division 2 title; Shen cruises to Division 1 crown

By ROB JONAS

CLIFTON PARK – Albany Academy had the elite swimmers. Glens Falls had the determined swimmers. In the end, the elite swimmers did enough to fend off the determined swimmers.

The Cadets built a big lead midway through Saturday’s Section 2 Division 2 Boys Swimming and Diving Championships and then held off a furious rally by the Indians to take the team title by 3.5 points. Albany Academy finished with 399 points, while Glens Falls finished second with 395.5 points.

“We knew it was going to be a battle,” said Albany Academy coach Scott Young. “I have great respect for Glens Falls. They have a great group of kids.”

“We weren’t supposed to [challenge], so we’re pretty psyched about how close we came,” said Glens Falls coach Kevin Crossman.

The Indians were within 5.5 points of the Cadets entering the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle. A Glens Falls victory and a third-place finish by Albany Academy would have given the Indians the team title. However, Queensbury dominated the 400 freestyle relay to take first place with a state meet-qualifying time of 3:16.89. Glens Falls finished second, but Albany Academy placed third to secure the team title.

Bryce Henkel was the undisputed leader for Albany Academy. The sophomore won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, and he swam on two winning relay teams to earn the Most Outstanding Swimmer award.

“He amazes me,” said Young. “I’m still waiting to see if he’s mortal or not. I don’t think he is.”

Bryce’s younger brother, Brayden Henkel, contributed a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke and a second-place performance in the 200-yard individual medley for Albany Academy. Queensbury’s David Walton (200-yard IM, 100-yard backstroke) and Gloversville-Mayfield’s Danny Helou (50- and 100-yard freestyles) also won a pair of individual titles at Sectionals.

Shenendehowa claimed the Division 1 team title with 501 points, well ahead of runner-up Niskayuna, which finished second with 383 points. Jackson Homan led the Plainsmen with victories in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard breaststroke, while Bryan Liu earned victories in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke for the Silver Warriors.
