Section 2 hockey playoffs: GMSVS Storm pull away from NSA to advance

Four third-period goals propelled the No. 8 GMSVS Storm to a 6-2 victory over No. 9 Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany in the opening round of the Section 2 Division 1 hockey playoffs Monday, Feb. 18, at the Schenectady County Recreational Facility in Glenville.

Storm goalie Allie Kelley stopped 33 of the 35 shots she faced to give her team their second Sectional victory in the last three years. Evan Carey notched a pair of goals, while Brendan Dunleavy and Mike Farina Jr. each contributed two assists. Alex Bzdell, Jayden Kelley, Cole Pasquini and TJ Pierce also tallied for the Storm.

Yoni Eligberg scored both of the Mohawks’ goals, and goalie Tony Cotugno had 10 saves.

The Storm join No. 6 Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa and No. 7 LaSalle in advancing to the quarterfinals. BH/BS defeated the No. 11 Capital District Jets 9-0, and LaSalle defeated No. 10 Adirondack 5-1 Saturday, Feb. 16.

The Storm face No. 1 Bethlehem Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Bethlehem Area YMCA. BH/BS meets No. 3 Saratoga Springs at Weibel Avenue Rink, and LaSalle takes on No. 2 Shenendehowa at Clifton Park Arena.
