No. 3 Watervliet jumped out to a 23-14 lead in the first quarter and kept its foot on the gas pedal on its way to a 101-56 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons Tuesday, Feb. 19, in a Section 2 Class B boys basketball playoff game.
Five Cannoneers reached double digits in the scoring column, led by Messiah Mallory’s 21-point performance. J.J. Chestnut and Khari Croley each contributed 19 points, and Derrick Beason added 16 points.
Rodney Parker scored 17 points, and Todd Williamson chipped in with 15 points for Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons.
Watervliet meets No. 11 Mechanicville in Friday’s Class B quarterfinal round at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park. The Red Raiders upended No. 6 Hudson 69-66 in the opening round Tuesday.
Josh Germain netted 18 points, and Devin Garland contributed 16 points for Mechanicville to offset a 32-point night from Hudson’s Dayquan Griffin.
The remaining quarterfinal match-ups pit No. 1 Schalmont against No. 8 Schuylerville, No. 4 Catskill against No. 5 Fonda-Fultonville and No. 2 Glens Falls against No. 7 Johnstown. All four Class B quarterfinals take place Friday at either Shenendehowa or Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
