Oliver Mathison scored in the third overtime to lift No. 6 Burnt Hills/Ballston spa to a 4-3 victory over No. 3 Saratoga Springs Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Section 2 Division 1 hockey quarterfinals at Weibel Avenue Rink.
Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Saratoga Springs rallied in the second period to pull even at 2-2. The two teams traded goals in the third period and then played through two scoreless overtimes before Mathison tallied the game winner.
Joe Amodio, Xavier Clarke and Will Detora scored goals for Saratoga Springs in the loss.
Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa meets No. 2 Shenendehowa in Saturday’s semifinal at Union College after the Plainsmen dispatched No. 7 LaSalle 3-1 Wednesday at Clifton Park Arena. Brennan Alheim recorded a hat trick, and goalie Kent Leighton stopped 24 shots for Shen.
Saturday’s other semifinal pits No. 1 Bethlehem against No. 4 Christian Brothers Academy. The Eagles topped No. 8 GMSVS 8-3 Wednesday at the Bethlehem Area YMCA, while CBA edged No. 5 Albany Academy 4-3 Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Albany County Hockey Training Facility in Colonie.
Michael Bievenue had two goals and an assist to lead Bethlehem past a stubborn GMSVS squad. William Bievenue contributed a goal and two assists, and Jonathan Thibodeau added a goal and three helpers for the Eagles, who pulled away with a five-goal third period.
Liam Spollen tallied twice, and goalie Allie Kelley made 39 saves for the Storm.
Hunter Pemrick guided CBA past Albany Academy with two goals and an assist, while Dale Hammond chipped in with a goal and two helpers. Connor Momrow, Anthony Sericolo and Blake Van Epps all tallied for Albany Academy.
The winners of Saturday’s semifinals meet in the Division 1 final Sunday, Feb. 24, at 6:15 p.m. at Union College.
