The higher-seeded teams won in the opening round of the Section 2 Class AA boys basketball playoffs Wednesday, Feb. 20.
No. 8 LaSalle pulled away from No. 9 Schenectady in the fourth quarter to prevail 66-54 and advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal game against top-seeded Bethlehem at Hudson Valley Community College. Connor Cepiel had 15 points, while Sean Desharnais and Gabe Lucarelli each added 12 points for the Cadets. Jonon White netted 19 points for the Patriots.
No. 7 Colonie moved on with a 62-36 victory over No. 10 Albany. Aaron Satin scored 18 points for the Garnet Raiders, who used a 21-7 run in the third quarter to take control. Brendan Coyle contributed 13 points, and Donovan Canty chipped in with 10 points. Tye-Rell Monroe had seven points for Albany. Colonie faces No. 2 Saratoga Springs in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
No. 6 Columbia handled No. 11 Niskayuna 57-37, as Cooper Zwanka led all scorers with 17 points. KJ Cox scored 11 points for Niskayuna. Columbia meets No. 3 Shenendehowa in the quarterfinals.
No. 4 Christian Brothers Academy and No. 5 Green Tech also advanced with opening round victories. CBA downed No. 13 Guilderland 80-61, while Green Tech eased past No. 12 Shaker 84-64.
Jordan King poured in 20 points, and Drew Signor contributed 16 points for CBA, which jumped out to a 38-18 halftime lead against Guilderland. Ryan Teaney paced the Dutchmen with 16 points, while Brenden Gagan and Dylan Gizzi added 13 points apiece.
Green Tech outscored Shaker 50-22 over the course of the second and third quarters to get the job done in the opening round. Kemore Johnson led the Eagles with 16 points, and Jorr Norgaisse chipped in with 14 points. Trey Mariano led Shaker with 13 points.
All four Class AA quarterfinal games are scheduled for HVCC Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
