State hockey playoffs: Queensbury shuts out John Jay-Cross River to advance to finals

BUFFALO – Queensbury dominated from start to finish to defeat Section 1 champion John Jay-Cross River 4-0 Saturday, March 9, in the state hockey Division 2 semifinals at HarborCenter.

The Spartans out-shot John Jay-Cross River 30-9 over the first two periods, and goaltender Owen Smith stopped all 17 shots he faced to help Queensbury advance to Sunday’s final against Skaneateles (Section 3).

Brendan Murphy got Queensbury on the scoreboard with 3:40 left in the first period off an assist from Brayden Ordway. Ian Miller tallied early in the second period, and Brendan Duffy added the first of his two goals with 3:02 left in the second stanza to give the Spartans a three-goal lead.

Goalie Eric Sasimovich had 32 saves for John Jay-Cross River, which defeated Queensbury in last year’s regional final.

Skaneateles defeated Webster-Thomas (Section 5) 5-2 in the other state semifinal.
