Section 2 football: A first glance at Class D

We will be taking a look at the alignments and schedules for all five football classes in Section 2 this week.

Class D
The number of Class D teams hasn’t changed since last year, but the teams themselves have changed for 2019.

Section 2’s smallest division remains at six teams, but there are some differences from 2018. Rensselaer and Hoosic Valley jumped up to Class C, while Helderberg Valley returns to Class D after spending last season in Class C. Chatham dropped down to Class D after being a Class C mainstay, and Corinth merged with Fort Edward and elected to play in Class D.

Corinth/Fort Edward and Cohoes are both ineligible for the Class D playoffs, as they are not playing in their assigned classes. That means the four Class D playoff teams – Helderberg Valley, Chatham, Whitehall and defending Section 2 champion Warrensburg – have already been determined.

Each team will have five league games and two crossover games during the regular season. Here is a look at the week-by-week schedule, which starts the weekend of Sept. 6 and 7.

Week 1
Helderberg Valley at Warrensburg
Cohoes at Chatham
Hoosic Valley at Whitehall (crossover)
Corinth/Fort Edward at Hoosick Falls (crossover)

Week 2
Warrensburg at Cohoes
Chatham at Helderberg Valley
Whitehall at Corinth/Fort Edward

Most interesting matchup: Whitehall at Corinth/Fort Edward. The newly-combined Corinth/Fort Edward program gets its first taste of Class D action when it hosts the Railroaders.

Side note: This is the only week where all six Class D teams play against each other.

Week 3
Warrensburg at Corinth/Fort Edward
Whitehall at Helderberg Valley
Granville at Cohoes (crossover)
Chatham at Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Whitehall at Helderberg Valley. The Railroaders will travel more than an hour to take on Helderberg Valley in a game which could go a long way to determining one of the favorites to reach the Class D final.

Week 4
Warrensburg at Whitehall
Helderberg Valley at Corinth/Fort Edward
Cohoes at Tamarac (crossover)
Chatham at Canajoharie/Fort Plain (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Warrensburg at Whitehall. The rivalry between the Burghers and the Railroaders continues.

Week 5
Cohoes at Corinth/Fort Edward
Whitehall at Chatham
Helderberg Valley at Fonda-Fultonville (crossover)
Stillwater at Warrensburg (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Stillwater at Warrensburg. One of Class C’s top programs hits the road to take on Class D’s finest.

Week 6
Helderberg Valley at Cohoes
Chatham at Warrensburg
Cambridge/Salem at Whitehall (crossover)
Corinth/Fort Edward at Greenwich (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Cambridge/Salem at Whitehall. The Indians are always one of the top small school teams in Section 2.

Week 7
Cohoes at Whitehall
Corinth/Fort Edward at Chatham
Warrensburg at Coxsackie-Athens (crossover)
Taconic Hills at Helderberg Valley (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Corinth/Fort Edward at Chatham. Two of the newest Class D teams take the field.
