Section 2 football: A first glance at Class A

We will be taking a look at the alignments and schedules for all five football classes in Section 2 this week. To read about Class D, click here. To read about Class C, click here. To read about Class B, click here.

Very little changed for Class A when Section 2 revealed its alignments and schedules for the 2019 football season. Troy, Ballston Spa, LaSalle and Columbia remain in Class A for another season after dropping down from Class AA in 2018.

The lone addition is Albany, a Class AA team that is electing to play a Class A schedule. Albany has made this move before in an attempt to be more competitive during the regular season. Because they are playing in a different class than where they would otherwise compete, the Falcons are not eligible for the playoffs.

Albany’s addition slightly alters the two-division alignment in Class A.

Capital Division – Albany, Amsterdam, Averill Park, Columbia, Green Tech, LaSalle and Troy

Grasso Division – Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Gloversville, Mohonasen, Queensbury, Scotia-Glenville and South Glens Falls

The week-by-week schedule for Class A is as follows:

Week 1
Albany at Green Tech
Columbia at Averill Park
Troy at LaSalle
Queensbury at Ballston Spa
Gloversville at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake
South Glens Falls at Mohonasen
Colonie at Amsterdam (crossover)
Hudson Falls at Scotia-Glenville (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Columbia at Averill Park. The Rensselaer County rivals square off right away to see which team will gain the inside track at first place in the Capital Division. That is, if either team can beat Troy.

Week 2
Albany at Averill Park
Amsterdam at Troy
LaSalle at Columbia
Ballston Spa at Gloversville
Scotia-Glenville at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake
Mohonasen at Queensbury
Green Tech at Schenectady (crossover)
Broadalbin-Perth at South Glens Falls (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: LaSalle at Columbia. Both teams may view this as a must-win game if things don’t go well for them in Week 1.

Week 3
LaSalle at Albany
Columbia at Amsterdam
Averill Park at Green Tech
Ballston Spa at Mohonasen
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at South Glens Falls
Queensbury at Scotia-Glenville
Christian Brothers Academy at Troy (crossover)
Glens Falls at Gloversville (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Queensbury at Scotia-Glenville. This might be the opportunity for the Tartans to prove that they are ready for the big time.

Week 4
Amsterdam at Albany
Averill Park at LaSalle
Green Tech at Troy
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at Ballston Spa
South Glens Falls at Gloversville
Mohonasen at Scotia-Glenville
Queensbury at Saratoga Springs (crossover)
Schalmont at Columbia (crossover)

Most interesting matchup within Class A: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at Ballston Spa. The Scotties played well in their first year in Class A. They get the opportunity to host their Route 50 neighbors this time around.

Most interesting matchup featuring a Class A team: Queensbury at Saratoga Springs. Two teams that reached the Section 2 finals in their respective classes meet up for a crossover contest.

Week 5
Columbia at Albany
Amsterdam at Green Tech
Troy at Averill Park
Mohonasen at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake
Gloversville at Queensbury
South Glens Falls at Scotia-Glenville
Shaker at Ballston Spa (crossover)

Averill Park at Amsterdam
Troy at Columbia
LaSalle at Green Tech
Scotia-Glenville at Ballston Spa
Gloversville at Mohonasen
Queensbury at South Glens Falls
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at Bethlehem (crossover)
Albany at Holy Trinity (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Troy at Columbia. The Flying Horses could either solidify their hold on the Capital Division lead or be looking at a must-win scenario to secure a home playoff game against a strong Columbia squad.

Week 7
Albany at Troy
Amsterdam at LaSalle
Green Tech at Columbia
Ballston Spa at South Glens Falls
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at Queensbury
Scotia-Glenville at Gloversville
Shenendehowa at Averill Park (crossover)
Mohonasen at Schuylerville (crossover)

Most interesting matchup: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at Queensbury. The Spartan Bowl could very well decide the Grasso Division title once again.
