Top-seeded Niskayuna scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning on its way to a 10-4 victory over No. 8 Bethlehem in the Section 2 Class AA baseball quarterfinals Saturday, May 25.
Aaron Whitley and Chris Erickson each homered to lead Niskayuna’s 12-hit attack. Whitley finished with three hits, while Erickson went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Starting pitcher Cole Hedden helped his own cause with two doubles and three RBI.
Kyle Turoski singled twice and doubled for Bethlehem, and Jerry Jennings added a two-run homer.
Elsewhere in Class AA, No. 2 Shenendehowa fended off a rally by No. 7 LaSalle to pull out a 5-4 victory. The Plainsmen scored all of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, in part due to three consecutive errors by the Cadets. LaSalle struck for three runs in the top of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough to catch Shen.
Patrick McGuire singled twice and scored a run, and Ben Lavery doubled for Shen. Jon Weber doubled, singled and drove in two runs for LaSalle, and Mark Finelli added a pair of hits and an RBI.
No. 3 Saratoga Springs shut out No. 6 Christian Brothers Academy 9-0, while No. 4 Guilderland defeated No. 5 Colonie 5-0. Saratoga faces Shen in one semifinal game Thursday, May 30, at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, while Niskayuna battles Guilderland in the other semifinal contest.
