Four Section 2 baseball teams advanced to the state tournament after winning their respective regional finals Saturday, June 8.
Evan Jones tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Shenendehowa to a 6-0 victory over Section 3 champion Fayetteville-Manlius in the Class AA regional final at Onondaga Community College. Jones struck out seven batters and walked only one in a 93-pitch performance.
Jake Reinisch got Shen on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Ben Lavery scored on an error, and Jones drove in Reinisch with a fielder’s choice to give the Plainsmen a 3-0 lead.
The score remained close until the top of the seventh inning. An error and two walks loaded the bases for pinch hitter Brody Vincenzi, who grounded out to drive in one run. Then, Nick Lemire lined a single to right field to drive in Reinisch and pinch runner Jack Sandberg for two more insurance runs.
Shen advances to the Class AA semifinals next weekend in Binghamton, where it will face Section 8 champion Massapequa June 14 at Binghamton University.
Ballston Spa defeated Section 3 champion Whitesboro 4-2 at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam. The Scotties will take on Section 11’s Sayville June 14 in the Class A semifinal at Union-Endicott High School.
Schuylerville shut out Section 10’s Ogdensburg Free Academy 4-0 to advance in the Class B playoffs. The Black Horses face Section 6 champion Medina in the state semifinals June 14 at either Broome County Community College or Binghamton University.
In Class D, Whitehall scored 19 runs in the third inning on its way to a 21-0 victory over Section 9’s Livingston Manor. The Railroaders play Section 4 champion South Kortright June 14 at Conlon Field.
Class C champion Fort Plain was the lone Section 2 team to fall in the regional finals, as Section 7 champion Ticonderoga topped the Hilltoppers 9-1. It was Fort Plain’s first loss of the season.
