Joseph Girard III receives national accolade from MaxPreps

What does Joseph Girard III have in common with the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray and Lonzo Ball?

They have all been named MaxPreps’ Male High School Athlete of the Year.

The national high school sports website named “JG3” its 2019 Male Athlete of the Year Wednesday following a 2018-19 season that included leading Glens Falls to state titles in football and basketball, as well as being named Mr. New York Basketball and Class B football’s Co-Player of the Year.

The Syracuse University-bound senior added to his state-best point total in basketball by averaging more than 47 points per game. He concluded his high school hoops career with a total of 4,763 points – more than 1,800 points greater than the previous mark set by Lance Stephenson. Girard will play guard for the Orange when the college basketball season begins in late fall.

Coincidentally, Girard capped his high school football career in the same facility that he will call his home court when he guided Glens Falls past Batavia in the Class B state final at the Carrier Dome last November. For the season, Girard threw for more than 3,100 yards, rushed for more than 400 yards and accounted for 50 touchdowns either through the air or on the ground.

Girard is the first New York athlete to receive the national honor from MaxPreps and the second football/basketball player to earn the accolade. The other honoree was Terrelle Pryor, who was MaxPreps’ first Male High School Athlete of the Year recipient in 2008.
