BINGHAMTON – Section 2 was a perfect 4-for-4 in state baseball semifinal action Friday, June 14.
Shenendehowa dethroned defending Class AA champion Massapequa (Section 8) 4-1 to advance to Saturday’s final against McQuaid (Section 5). Brendan Disonell pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out 14 batters to guide the Plainsmen to the semifinal victory.
All of Shen’s runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jake Reinisch led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk. An error by Massapequa’s pitcher allowed Reinisch to reach third, and Thomas Krill’s single drove in Reinisch with the game’s first run.
Nick Lemire followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Ben Lavery to third and Krill to second. Disonell then laid down a suicide squeeze bunt and reached first on a throwing error. Lavery scored on the bunt and overthrow to put the Plainsmen ahead 2-0.
Another error by Massapequa allowed Krill to score and Disonell to move up to second base. Disonell then stole third and scored on Evan Bean’s ground out to give Shen a four-run advantage.
Massapequa threatened to score in the top of the fifth inning with runners on first and third and two outs, but Disonell got out of the jam with a strikeout. He then got the first two outs of the top of the sixth inning before a dropped third strike and a double broke up his shutout bid. Disonell quickly recovered and struck out the next batter to avoid further damage, and then he completed a perfect seventh inning with two more strikeouts and a fly out to left field.
In Class A, Ballston Spa rolled past Sayville (Section 11) 10-0 to reach Saturday’s final against Maine-Endwell (Section 4).
Luke Gold blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to stake the Scotties to a 2-0 lead. An RBI single from Donovan Rhoden and a passed ball brought in Ballston Spa’s next two runs in the bottom of the third,
Ballston Spa put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Poirier lined a two-run double and then scored on Evan Fox’s RBI single to give the Scotties a 7-0 lead. Then, Gold launched his second two-run homer of the afternoon, and Jake Manderson ended matters with a solo home run.
Schuylerville advanced to the Class B final with a 6-3 victory over Medina (Section 6). Colton Weatherwax’s three-run double in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the difference maker for the Black Horses, who rallied from an early 1-0 deficit. Schuylerville faces defending state champion Center Moriches (Section 11) in the Class B championship game Saturday.
In Class D, Whitehall shut out South Kortright (Section 4) 5-0 to advance into the state final against Brocton (Section 6). Ethan Patch kept South Kortright at bay all afternoon and helped his own cause with a two-run single as part of the Railroaders’ four-run fifth inning.
