Soccer: Bethlehem boys edge Shaker in Suburban Council showdown

The Bethlehem boys soccer team made an early goal stand up in a 1-0 Suburban Council victory over Shaker Thursday, Sept. 5, in Latham.

Bethlehem received a corner kick one minute into the contest after Shaker’s defense cleared the ball over its own end line. On the corner itself, the ball bounced around the penalty box until Salko Kanic knocked it into the back of the net to give the Eagles the lead.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances throughout the rest of the game, but neither could finish their opportunities. Bethlehem finished the afternoon with 15 shots on goal and six corners, while Shaker registered 17 shots on frame and five corners.

Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Paul Abatiello scored two minutes into extra time to give Christian Brothers Academy a 3-2 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Abatiello struck in the seventh minute off an assist from Alejandro Torres to put the Brothers ahead 1-0. Jacob Scott converted a penalty kick five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1, but Wyatt Leto tallied in the 29th minute off a feed from Abatiello to give CBA a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Scott scored again two minutes into the second half to knot the score at 2-2 for BH-BL. The game remained deadlocked through the remained of regulation before Abatiello netted the game winner in overtime.
