Academy of the Holy Names junior Ava Panto was named the Player of the Year when the Colonial Council announced its girls soccer all-stars Wednesday, Nov. 7.
Panto scored a team-high 38 goals and added eight assists to help Holy Names win the Colonial Council Liberty Division and the Section 2 Class B titles.
Four more Holy Names players – Megan Marini, Bella Tronco, Marissa DeMartino and Grace Field – were named first team all-stars. CLIFTON PARK – Shenendehowa (Division 1) and Queensbury (Division 2) eased to the team titles at the Section 2 Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Shenendehowa Aquatic Center.
Shen dethroned defending Division 1 champion Niskayuna with a commanding total of 441 points. Niskayuna placed second with 407 points, and Bethlehem finished third with 254 points.
Mohonasen-Schalmont’s Mary Kate Conway and Bethlehem’s Sydney Sorbello each won a pair of individual events at the Division 1 meet. Conway claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, while Sorbello finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle.
Niskayuna’s Lillian Bushway (500-yard freestyle) and Yunfan Dong (100-yard backstroke) also won individual events Saturday, as did Albany Academy’s Claire Gerdeman (50-yard freestyle), and Guilderville’s Kasey Keaney (100-yard breaststroke). SARATOGA SPRINGS – One race lived up to its pre-event billing, while another showdown never materialized at Friday’s Section 2 Cross Country Championships at a soggy Saratoga Spa State Park.
The Class A boys race turned into a battle royale between Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs, with the Plainsmen pulling out a three-point victory over the Blue Streaks, 60-63. Saratoga had two of the top four runners in the race, but Shen’s pack mentality proved to be the deciding factor.

Mohonasen setter Bryannah Green received the Most Valuable Player award when the Colonial Council girls volleyball coaches revealed their all-star selections Monday, Oct. 29.
Green led the Mighty Warriors with 105 service aces, 225 assists and 42 kills. She helped Mohonasen win its first Section 2 playoff match when the fifth-seeded Mighty Warriors defeated No. 4 Averill Park in the quarterfinals.
Mohonasen Libero Hailey DeGuire was chosen by the league’s coaches as the Defensive Player of the Year. DeGuire notched 185 digs for an average of 3.5 digs per match in 2018.
Outside hitter Sydney Neff from Academy of the Holy Names was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Neff had a hitting average of .562 to lead Holy Names’ offense, and she also led her team in defensive digs. Class AA and Class A held their quarterfinal matches Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Section 2 girls volleyball playoffs.
The top four seeds advanced in Class AA, though two of the matches were close. No. 4 Columbia edged No. 5 Guilderland 3-2, while No. 3 Niskayuna got past No. 6 Bethlehem 3-1.
Columbia and Guilderland split the first four games before the Blue Devils pulled out a 25-23 victory in the fifth game. Chesney Romer had 20 kills for Columbia in the victory.
Niskayuna won the first two games of its playoff against Bethlehem 25-20 and 25-15. The Lady Eagles took the third game 25-18 before the Silver Warriors closed the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth game. Mohonasen’s Loren Cuomo took home the singles title for the second year in a row, and the Guilderland duo of Katrina Setchenkov and Aasiyah Virjee won the doubles championship at the Section 2 girls tennis tournament Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Sportime indoor tennis facility in Rotterdam.
Cuomo rallied to defeat Shaker’s Haejin Lee 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the singles final. Setchenkov and Virjee swept Saratoga Springs’ Katia Kelly and Ellie Siebeneck 7-6, 6-2 for the doubles title.
In the third place matches, Shaker’s Taylor Crain defeated Niskayuna’s Christine Lee 6-4, 6-1, and the Bethlehem doubles team of Zoe Davis and Letti Donovan edged Guilderland’s Meghana Bhupati and Lavanya Prabhakar 6-3, 7-5. The top three singles and doubles players all qualify for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, which take place Oct. 27-29 at Tri-City Tennis Center in Latham.
Shenendehowa (AA), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (A), Broadalbin-Perth (B), Voorheesville (C) and Galway (D) are the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes for the 2018 Section 2 girls volleyball tournament.

Top-seeded Queensbury (16-1-0) pulled out a 3-0 victory over No. 8 Scotia-Glenville in the Section 2 Class B boys soccer quarterfinals Friday, Oct. 19.
The Tartans (10-8-0) pressured Queensbury’s defense several times in the first half, but could not get anything into the goal. The Spartans got on the scoreboard less than one minute before halftime when Aidan Jordi-Donnelly fed a through ball to Teddy Borgos, who promptly kicked it into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Liv Raucci scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead No. 6 Mohonasen to a 3-0 victory over No. 11 Gloversville in the opening round of the Section 2 Class A girls soccer playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Rotterdam.
Matti Muller also tallied for the Mighty Warriors, and Hailey Dunsmore contributed an assist.
