Glens Falls quarterback Joseph Girard III was named the Class B Co-Player of the Year for the second year in a row when the New York State Sportswriters Association revealed its small school all-state football teams Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Girard threw for 3,084 yards and 36 touchdowns against six interceptions to lead the Indians to their second state Class B title in three years. He also carried the ball 107 times for 395 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he had three touchdowns on defense and special teams.
Girard split Player of the Year honors with Batavia running back Ray Leach, who set Section 5 records for rushing yards, touchdowns and points scored in leading the Blue Devils to the state final against Glens Falls.
Glens Falls kicker Sam Hogan and Hudson linebacker Spencer Goldstein were first team all-state selections in Class B. Hogan converted 57 extra point kicks and added a pair of field goals, while Goldstein was one of the top defenders for a Hudson team that finished second in the Reinfurt Division. Four Gloversville bowlers knocked down more than 600 pins apiece in their three games to lead the Huskies to a 3,778-3,357 victory over Broadalbin-Perth Wednesday, Dec. 19, in a Foothills Council match.
Derek Taylor led Gloversville with a 704 series, as he averaged nearly 235 pins per game. Aiden Carter had the high game for the Huskies with a score of 258 and finished with a 685 series. Adrian Dorman (639) and Adam Loveless (608) also had strong performances for Gloversville.
Mike Piska had a 279 game and a 747 series for Broadalbin-Perth.
The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys volleyball team lost to Section 8 champion Bellmore-JFK in the Division 2 finals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Capital Center in Albany.
Bellmore-JFK won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-22. BH-BL came back to win the third set 25-14 before Bellmore-JFK closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set.
BH-BL had a tough road to get to the finals. After splitting their first two games of pool play against Eden (Section 6), the Spartans played the Raiders in a tiebreaker set. BH-BL rallied from a 20-17 deficit to take a 23-21 lead and had two set points, but Eden rallied to win the tiebreaker 28-26. Six Queensbury players – including league MVP Ray Jones – were selected as first-team all-stars by the Foothills Council boys soccer coaches.
Jones anchored a Queensbury defense that allowed a total of 10 goals during its run to the Class A state semifinals. Along the way, the Spartans posted a seven-game shutout streak against Foothills Council opponents and allowed league opponents a total of four goals during the regular season.
Four Schuylerville players and three South Glens Falls players made the first team, with the rest coming from Scotia-Glenville and Hudson Falls.

Section 2 will be well represented at this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball Championships at Cool Insuring Arena.
All five Sectional representatives won their regional finals Saturday, Nov. 10, to qualify for the state tournament, which takes place Nov. 17 and 18 in Glens Falls.
Class AA champion Shenendehowa had the toughest challenge of regionals, as it needed four sets to defeat Section 3 champion Baldwinsville at Gloversville High School. The Plainswomen won the first two sets 27-25 and 25-22 before the Bees took the third set 25-22. Shen and Baldwinsville continued to battle back and forth before the Plainswomen closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set. Four Section 2 girls volleyball teams reached the second round of state regionals with victories Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Class A representative Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake had little trouble with Section 3’s Jamesville-DeWitt, as the Spartans won 25-7, 25-9 and 25-16 to set up a regional final match against Section 10’s Massena Saturday, Nov. 10. Carlie Rzeszotarski recorded 10 kills and two blocks, while Claire Isaksen contributed 31 assists for BH-BL. Grace Isaksen led the defensive effort with 19 digs. SARATOGA SPRINGS – One race lived up to its pre-event billing, while another showdown never materialized at Friday’s Section 2 Cross Country Championships at a soggy Saratoga Spa State Park.
The Class A boys race turned into a battle royale between Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs, with the Plainsmen pulling out a three-point victory over the Blue Streaks, 60-63. Saratoga had two of the top four runners in the race, but Shen’s pack mentality proved to be the deciding factor.

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Schuylerville finished on top of a competitive field in the girls race, and Scotia-Glenville won the boys team title at Monday’s Foothills Council Cross Country Championships at Saratoga Spa State Park.
In a race where the top five girls teams were separated by 23 points, Schuylerville prevailed by placing three runners in the top 15 to finish with 76 points. Sunni LaBounty claimed the individual title for the Black Horses by finishing in a time of 19:10.73, while teammates Anya Vautrin (seventh place, 20:23.98) and Megan Vianese (11th, 20:45.51) were among 14 runners who posted sub 21-minute times.
