Section 2 wins several titles at state track meet

MIDDLETOWN – It was a good weekend for Section 2 athletes at the New York State High School Track and Field Championships at Middletown High School.

Colonie and Schenectady’s 400-meter boys relay teams highlighted the weekend by taking the top two places in Saturday’s Federation championship race. Fresh off winning the public school Division 1 championship Friday, Colonie’s team of Josiah Kemp, Shai Young, Cristian Hubbard and Michael Hermance claimed the Federation title with a time of 41.39 seconds. Schenectady – which placed fourth in the Division 1 race – took second place with a time of 41.75 seconds,

Section 2 also demonstrated its strength in the boys pole vault. Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Shane Racey cleared the bar at 16 feet to win the Division 2 and Federation titles, while Albany Academy’s Donald Jones finished second by clearing 15 feet, 6 inches. State track meet primer: Ama Boham, Allie Ryder and Donald Jones lead list of Section 2 contenders

Three Section 2 athletes enter this weekend’s New York State High School Track and Field Championships with the top performances in their individual events.

Ichabod Crane’s Ama Boham posted the top time among Division 2 (small school) athletes in the girls 100-meter high hurdles this season (14.40). No other girl in the Division 2 field posted a time close to Boham’s mark, and it is the second-fastest overall in New York State this season. Only Chibugo Obichere of Division 1’s Valley Stream South (Section 8) posted a faster overall time (13.80).

New Lebanon’s Allie Ryder enters the state meet with the top distance among Division 2 throwers in the girls discus. Ryder’s best throw this season is 122 feet, 5 inches, 2 inches ahead of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s LeeAnne Lowery. Section 2 announces playoff seedings, match-ups

The Section 2 baseball committee unveiled its seedings and match-ups for the playoffs Wednesday, May 22.

Niskayuna (Class AA), Ballston Spa (A), Coxsackie-Athens (B), Chatham (C) and Whitehall (D) received No. 1 seeds for their respective classes. Whitehall and No. 2 Germantown each received byes into the semifinal round, as Class D had only six teams qualify for the playoffs.

Opening round games are scheduled for Thursday, May 23, weather permitting. The finals take place at Joseph Bruno Stadium at Hudson Valley Community College May 31 through June 3.

Section 2 Group 3 track and field championships: Broadalbin-Perth defends its boys team title; Taconic Hills wins girls title

Broadalbin-Perth defended its boys team title, while Taconic Hills claimed the girls team championship at the Section 2 Group 3 Track and Field Championships Tuesday, May 21, at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School.

The Patriots dominated the field events to win the boys team title with 139.5 points. Johnstown was second with 72 points, and Ichabod Crane placed third with 69 points.

“Eighty-eight days ago, we started a climb in which we challenged our boys to try to repeat as Section 2 champions and our girls to return to the top for the first time since 2015,” said Broadalbin-Perth coach Jeff Richards. “Although we had our difficulties throughout the season, our team continued to move upward. Three Cambridge players named to Class C All-State girls basketball team

State tournament MVP Sophie Phillips of Cambridge and Lake George’s leading scorer, Graceann Bennett, were named first-team Class C All-State girls basketball players by the New York State Sportswriters Association when the list was revealed Tuesday, May 21.

Phillips guided the Indians to their first state title in 2019, while Bennett was the leading scorer in the Adirondack League with an average of 22 points per game. Phillips averaged 17.5 points per game for Cambridge.

Sophie’s twin sister, Lilly Phillips, was a third team selection, while Fiona Mooney was named to the eighth team – giving Cambridge three All-State players. Continue reading “Three Cambridge players named to Class C All-State girls basketball team”

Broadalbin-Perth boys track places second at Luciano Invitational

HUDSON FALLS – Broadalbin-Perth was the top Section 2 boys track team at Saturday’s Anthony Luciano Invitational at Hudson Falls High School.

Led by a strong performance from its field athletes, Broadalbin-Perth finished second overall with 55 points. Saranac (Section 7) claimed the boys team title with 82 points.

Track and field: Maple Hill sweeps team titles at its own invitational

SCHODACK – Maple Hill won the boys and girls team titles at its invitational meet Saturday, April 13.

The boys team finished with 138 points, 13 points ahead of runner-up New Paltz. The girls team breezed to the title with 107 points – more than 40 points ahead of its nearest competitor, Broadalbin-Perth.

Maple Hill’s boys team was particularly strong in the 110-meter hurdles, where it swept the top three places. Bryan Jacobs led the way with a winning time of 15.86 seconds, less than four-tenths of a second ahead of Seth Roberts. Thacher Deyoe completed the 1-2-3 Wildcat sweep with a time of 16.31 seconds.

Roberts contributed a victory in the 200-meter dash for Maple Hill, and he teamed up with Evan Kulpa, Jack Pomykaj and Eric Steffeck to win the 400-meter relay. Kulpa had an individual victory in the long jump.

Emma Pearsall led the Maple Hill girls’ team with victories in the 400-meter race and the high jump. She also ran the anchor leg on the Wildcats’ winning 1,600-meter relay team. Other athletes with two individual titles include Ichabod Crane’s Monique Benn (100- and 200-meter dash) and Ama Boham (100- and 400-meter hurdles), as well as Duanesburg’s Elaine Atanasova (1,500- and 3,000-meter races) and New Lebanon-Berlin’s Allie Ryder (shot put and discus). Section 2 football: A first look at Class B

We will be taking a look at the alignments and schedules for all five football classes in Section 2 this week. To read about Class D, click here. To read about Class C, click here.

Very little has changed in the Class B football ranks for 2019. The lone addition is Holy Trinity, which moved up from Class C after adding players from Bishop Maginn to its fold. Holy Trinity will play in the Reinfurt Division.

No Class B teams from 2018 moved up or down a level, which means the divisions are virtually unchanged.

Foothills Council track and field: Broadalbin-Perth tunes up for Bi-County Meet with impressive performance

The Broadalbin-Perth track and field team readied itself for Saturday’s Bi-County Meet in Johnstown by storming past Gloversville in a Foothills Council dual meet Thursday, April 4. The boys team defeated Gloversille 135-6, while the girls team downed the Huskies 115-20. State indoor track and field qualifiers: Josiah Kemp, Ella Kurto among Section 2 athletes who won two events

ALBANY – Section 2 held its state indoor track and field qualifier Sunday, Feb. 24, at the University at Albany.

Colonie’s Josiah Kemp and Averill Park’s James Cocca each won two individual boys events. Kemp took first place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.57 seconds, and he finished first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.52 seconds. Cocca swept the throwing events, winning the shot put and the weight throw.

On the girls’ side, Saratoga Springs’ Ella Kurto won the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:49.15 and the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:04.13. Guilderland’s Isabella Bruno finished first in the long jump and the triple jump, while Shenendehowa’s Chidera Anameze earned victories in the shot put and weight throw.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships, which take place Saturday, March 2, at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility on Staten Island.
