BINGHAMTON – Two Section 2 teams completed dominating state tournament performances with state championships Saturday.
Ballston Spa won its first-ever state title by pulling out a 13-6 victory over Maine-Endwell (Section 4) in the Class A final, while Whitehall earned its first state baseball championship in 35 years with a 12-1 victory over Brocton (Section 6).
Chance Checca’s two-run homer in the first inning helped Ballston Spa build a 3-0 lead. Donovan Rhoden contributed a two-run double, and Jayden Williamson added a two-run single for the Scotties, who outscored their state tournament opponents 23-6 during the weekend. BINGHAMTON – Section 2 was a perfect 4-for-4 in state baseball semifinal action Friday, June 14.
Shenendehowa dethroned defending Class AA champion Massapequa (Section 8) 4-1 to advance to Saturday’s final against McQuaid (Section 5). Four Section 2 baseball teams advanced to the state tournament after winning their respective regional finals Saturday, June 8.
Evan Jones tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Shenendehowa to a 6-0 victory over Section 3 champion Fayetteville-Manlius in the Class AA regional final at Onondaga Community College. Jones struck out seven batters and walked only one in a 93-pitch performance.
Jake Reinisch got Shen on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Ben Lavery scored on an error, and Jones drove in Reinisch with a fielder’s choice to give the Plainsmen a 3-0 lead.
The score remained close until the top of the seventh inning. An error and two walks loaded the bases for pinch hitter Brody Vincenzi, who grounded out to drive in one run. Then, Nick Lemire lined a single to right field to drive in Reinisch and pinch runner Jack Sandberg for two more insurance runs.
Shen advances to the Class AA semifinals next weekend in Binghamton, where it will face Section 8 champion Massapequa June 14 at Binghamton University. Continue reading “Section 2 comes up big in regional baseball finals”
TROY – A pitcher’s duel turned into a runaway victory for Shenendehowa.
The Plainsmen scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Niskayuna 7-1 for the Section 2 Class AA baseball title Monday, June 3 at Joseph Bruno Stadium.
Jake Reinisch got the ninth-inning rally started with an RBI triple to plate pinch runner C.J. Latham with the go-ahead run. Niskayuna nearly got out of the jam allowing just the one run, but back-to-back bases-loaded singles by Sam Law and Patrick McGuire plated three more runs. Law and McGuire then scored on a wild pitch by Cole Hedden to give the Plainsmen a 7-1 lead. ROTTERDAM – With the season on the line, Averill Park manager George Brooks called upon a freshman who had recently been called up from the junior varsity team to get the big hit.
Pinch hitter Alex Yash was up to the challenge. Yash lined lined a one-out RBI single to drive in the tying run in the top of the seventh inning and then scored the go-ahead run on an error to lift the sixth-seeded Warriors to a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Mohonasen in the Section 2 Class A baseball quarterfinals Saturday, May 25.
“We didn’t have a spot on varsity for him this year, so I put him on JV to get him reps,” said Brooks. “At the same time, we’ve seen him at practice. Something about his swing really stuck with me. Top-seeded Niskayuna scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning on its way to a 10-4 victory over No. 8 Bethlehem in the Section 2 Class AA baseball quarterfinals Saturday, May 25.
Aaron Whitley and Chris Erickson each homered to lead Niskayuna’s 12-hit attack. Whitley finished with three hits, while Erickson went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Starting pitcher Cole Hedden helped his own cause with two doubles and three RBI.

ROTTERDAM – No. 11 Greenwich eased past No. 6 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 14-0 in the first round of the Section 2 Class C baseball playoffs Friday, May 24, at Veterans’ Field. The Witches advanced to the quarterfinals against No. 3 Maple Hill, which defeated No. 14 Warrensburg 3-0 in their opening round match-up. The Section 2 baseball committee unveiled its seedings and match-ups for the playoffs Wednesday, May 22.
Niskayuna (Class AA), Ballston Spa (A), Coxsackie-Athens (B), Chatham (C) and Whitehall (D) received No. 1 seeds for their respective classes. Whitehall and No. 2 Germantown each received byes into the semifinal round, as Class D had only six teams qualify for the playoffs.
Opening round games are scheduled for Thursday, May 23, weather permitting. The finals take place at Joseph Bruno Stadium at Hudson Valley Community College May 31 through June 3.

Fonda-Fultonville scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in defeating Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 11-2 Monday, May 20, in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game. Four Braves had multi-hit games, led by Dylan Hamlen’s three-hit performance. Both teams receive their Section 2 baseball playoff seedings Wednesday. Tommy Stewart’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Niskayuna a 7-6 victory over Christian Brothers Academy Monday, May 20, in a Suburban Council baseball game.
Peter O’Toole’s three-run homer highlighted CBA’s four-run seventh inning rally that tied the score at 6-6. But, Niskayuna got the winning run across to close out its regular season with a 12-4 league record and an overall record of 13-5.
Aaron Whitley posted a four-hit afternoon for Niskayuna, including a two-run homer and a two-run triple.
