Track and field: Saratoga Springs, Guilderland claim team titles at Queensbury Invitational

Guilderland edged Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake by half a point to win the girls team title at the Queensbury Invitational track and field meet Saturday, May 11. Guilderland finished with 93.5 points, while Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake placed second with 93 points.

The Lady Dutch thrived in the relay events, as they won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events and placed second in the 400-meter relay. Kate Scanlan and Tyler Howard ran on both of Guilderland’s winning relays. Makiya Donnelly added an individual victory in the high jump. Section 2 football: A first glance at Class C

We will be taking a look at the alignments and schedules for all five football classes in Section 2 this week. To read about Class D, click here.

Four Class C football programs are on the move to different classes in 2019, while two Class D teams jump in to replace them.

Holy Trinity moves up to Class B this fall after adding players from Bishop Maginn to its roster, which also includes players from Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, Catholic Central and Saratoga Central Catholic. Meanwhile, Chatham and Helderberg Valley slide down to Class D, and Corinth merges with Fort Edward and moves to Class D, where it will be ineligible for the Section 2 playoffs. Wasaren League baseball: Mechanicville edges Saratoga Central Catholic

One run was all it took for Mechanicville to defeat Saratoga Central Catholic 1-0 in a Wasaren League baseball game Wednesday, April 3.

Jacob Popiel scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the second inning to support starting pitcher Jacob LaFountain, who struck out eight batters in five innings of work for the Red Raiders. Nicholas Billert and Zachary White also got hits, and Devin Garland tossed two shutout innings in relief to earn the save. Scenes from Section 2 Class B boys basketball: Watervliet advances to semis with victory over Mechanicville

Updated at 7:45 p.m. to reflect proper results of Fonda-Fultonville game against Catskill.

CLIFTON PARK – No. 3 Watervliet jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and pulled away for a 74-57 victory over No. 11 Mechanicville in the Section 2 Class B boys basketball quarterfinals Friday, Feb. 22, at Shenendehowa High School.

Messiah Mallory poured in 21 points, and Khari Croley contributed 19 points for Watervliet, which faces No. 2 Glens Falls in the Class B semifinals Monday, Feb. 25, at Cool Insuring Arena. Derrick Beason chipped in with 14 points for the Cannoneers.

Section 2 Class B girls basketball playoffs: Fonda-Fultonville continues its run with victory over Schalmont

No. 13 Fonda-Fultonville’s playoff ride will carry into the Section 2 Class B girls basketball semifinals following a 55-39 quarterfinal victory over No. 5 Schalmont Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Tamarac High School.

After clinging to a two-point halftime lead, the Braves gradually pulled away from the Sabres to advance into Tuesday’s semifinal against top-seeded Tamarac, which fended off Hudson 52-47.

Abigail Lombardoni made four three-pointers and finished with 27 points for Fonda-Fultonville, while Lyndsay Lombardoni contributed 10 points. Payton Graber netted 26 points for Schalmont.

The Tamarac-Hudson quarterfinal game was billed as a battle between two of Class B’s top players – Tamarac’s Emily Erickson and Hudson’s Deja Beauford. However, it was Tamarac’s supporting cast that made the difference, as the Bengals had nine players enter the scoring column to Hudson’s seven players. Scenes from Section 2 Class B playoffs: Watervliet cruises past Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons

No. 3 Watervliet jumped out to a 23-14 lead in the first quarter and kept its foot on the gas pedal on its way to a 101-56 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons Tuesday, Feb. 19, in a Section 2 Class B boys basketball playoff game.

Five Cannoneers reached double digits in the scoring column, led by Messiah Mallory’s 21-point performance. J.J. Chestnut and Khari Croley each contributed 19 points, and Derrick Beason added 16 points.

Indoor track: Four leagues host championship meets at University at Albany

One day. Four league championship meets. One location.

The Colonial Council, the Wasaren League, the Foothills Council and the Independent League held their league meets together Sunday, Feb. 10, at the University at Albany’s SEFCU Arena.

The Colonial Council meet was a lopsided affair, as the Mohonasen girls and Albany Academy for Boys track teams dominated the competition. Mohonasen won the girls team title with 174 points, well ahead of runner-up Academy of the Holy Names, while Albany Academy finished 50 points ahead of Mohonasen in the boys team standings, 138-88.

Emma Sinisgalli (1,000-meter race), Kate Sherman (1,500) and Anna Sherman (3,000) won the distance events for Mohonasen. The Mighty Warriors swept the top three places in the 1,500 and the top two places in the 3,000, for added measure. Mohonasen also won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays, and Emily Racana took first place in the pole vault, with teammate Lena Calkins placing second.

Ahmad Praileau led Albany Academy with victories in the 55-meter dash, the 55-meter hurdles and the long jump. Jack Campito contributed a win in the triple jump, while Nick Graziano (1,600) and Vishal Hada (3,200) added victories in the distance races for the Cadets. Donald Jones won the pole vault. Section 2 boys basketball: Bethlehem, Troy, Schalmont, Lake George and OESJ receive No. 1 seeds

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Brackets for the Section 2 boys basketball playoffs were revealed Wednesday, Feb. 13, and there were not many surprises.

Bethlehem (Class AA), Troy (Class A), Schalmont (Class B), Lake George (Class C) and Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville (Class D) were named the top seeds by the Section 2 committee. Of the five No. 1 seeds, only Schalmont (19-1) was a mild surprise, as the Sabres were chosen over Foothills Council champion Glens Falls (19-1), which has only an out-of-state loss this season. Schalmont suffered an 80-69 loss to Colonial Council rival LaSalle Thursday, Feb. 7, for its only setback of the season, but grabbed the top seed due to a better strength of schedule, according to boys basketball chairman Will Ferguson.

“They were so close that Schalmont’s [seeding] points were only slightly ahead on the sheet,” said Fergsuon. “Then, there was the schedule … the number of AA’s and A;s played vs. the B’ and C’s they played against each other. Section 2 girls basketball playoffs: Shenendehowa, Averill Park, Tamarac, Cambridge and Fort Edward receive top seeds

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Section 2 announced its brackets for this year’s girls basketball tournament Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Shenendehowa (Class AA), Averill Park (Class A), Tamarac (Class B), Cambridge (Class C) and Fort Edward (Class D) are the No. 1 seeds in their respective brackets. Shen, Averill Park and Fort Edward received byes into the quarterfinals.

Section 2 bowling championships: Lansingburgh takes Class B boys crown

SCHENECTADY – Lansingburgh bested the field by more than 200 pins to take the team title at the Section 2 Class B boys bowling championships Friday, Feb. 8, at Boulevard Bowl.

The Knights had three bowlers record six-game series of more than 1,200 pins to win their 11th Sectional title with a total pin fall of 5,912. Mechanicville was second with a score of 5,634, and Schuylerville placed third with a score of 5,487.

Codi Genthner led Lansingburgh with a six-game total of 1,254, which included a high single game of 246. Mike Connally was second on the Knights with a total of 1,228 pins, which included a three-game set of 654, and Grant Laustrup added a six-game series of 1,203 that included a high single game of 254.
