Mechanicville’s Jeff Luce was named the most valuable offensive player, and teammate Justin Pugliese was selected as the most valuable defensive player by the Wasaren League boys soccer coaches when they announced the league’s all-star teams Saturday, Oct. 27.
Luce currently leads all Section 2 offensive players with 33 goals, to go along with eight assists. Pugliese led a Mechanicville defense that allowed a total of 20 goals this season, including seven shutouts.
Cambridge’s Parker Robertson was named the Wasaren League’s most valuable goalkeeper. The junior stopped 83 percent of the shots he faced to help the Indians finish with a 7-7-2 record. Continue reading “Wasaren League announces boys soccer all-stars”
The opening round of the Section 2 Class C and Class D girls volleyball tournaments took place Wednesday, Oct. 24.
In Class C, most of the higher seeds won their opening round matches. The exceptions were No. 12 Greenville (15-4) and No. 10 Tamarac (9-6). Greenville edged No. 5 Saratoga Central Catholic 3-2, while Tamarac swept No. 7 Hudson 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23.
No. 3 Stillwater (13-2), No. 4 Catskill (19-0), No. 6 Albany Academy for Girls (7-8) and No. 8 Canajoharie/Fort Plain (7-3) all won their opening round matches. Stillwater defeated No. 14 Chatham 3-0 to advance into the quarterfinals against Albany Academy for Girls, which defeated No. 11 Loudonville Christian 3-1. Catskill swept No. 13 Taconic Hills 3-0, and Canajoharie/Fort Plain defeated No. 9 Mechanicville 3-0. ROTTERDAM – Anthony Carlucci’s second goal of the evening helped No. 2 Ichabod Crane rally for a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 3 Schuylerville in the Section 2 Class B boys soccer semifinals at Mohonasen High School.
Carlucci tied the score at 2-2 late in the second half when his direct kick sailed into the upper corner of the Schuylerville goal. Then with three minutes left in the first overtime period, Carlucci eluded the Schuylerville defense and fired a shot into the net for the game winner.
Joe Dolan headed in Edgar Gomez’s corner kick with less than 16 minutes left in the first half to give the Riders a 1-0 lead. Mike Lanfear tallied early in the second half and assisted on Christian Petralia’s goal that put the Black Horses ahead 2-1. Schalmont and Academy of Holy Names will meet for a third time on the soccer pitch this season – this time, for the Section 2 Class B title.
No. 2 Schalmont pulled out a 6-4 victory over No. 3 Voorheesville in one semifinal Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Lansingburgh High School, while top-seeded Holy Names pulled away for a 5-0 victory over No. 4 Mechanicville in the other semifinal.
Sofia Cassano scored two goals and added an assist, and Davia Rossi contributed three assists for Schalmont in its victory over Voorheesville. Vanessa Wainwright also tallied twice, while Ashley Cirilla and Jules Monlea each had a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Eden Messemer made 12 saves. Shenendehowa (AA), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (A), Broadalbin-Perth (B), Voorheesville (C) and Galway (D) are the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes for the 2018 Section 2 girls volleyball tournament.

Five players had multi-goal games for No. 2 Schalmont in a 15-0 victory over No. 15 Corinth in the opening round of the Section 2 Class B girls soccer playoffs Thursday, Oct. 18.
Isabella Amoroso recorded a hat trick and two assists, while Sofia Cassano contributed two goals and two assists for the Sabres (15-1-1), ranked No. 4 among Class B teams in the New York State Sportswriters Association poll. Jules Monlea, Ashley Cirilla and Chloe Schaffer all tallied twice, and Isabella Almodovar added three assists. Quarterfinal match-ups are now set in Class B, as eight boys soccer teams advanced to the next round of the Section 2 playoffs Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Top-seeded Schalmont (14-1-2) shut out Colonial Council rival Cohoes 4-0 in Rotterdam. Dom Scalice tallied twice for the Sabres, who shook off a slow start to pull away with three second-half goals. Zach Metzold and Dylan Martin also scored goals.

Bella Realbuto served up five aces as part of a strong team effort in Tamarac’s 3-0 victory over Mechanicville Wednesday, Oct. 17, in a Wasaren League girls volleyball match.
Realbuto finished with 14 service points for the Bengals (8-6 league, 9-6 overall), who won by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-18. Kerianne Bugbee had 16 service points and four kills, while Francesca DiScanio contributed nine digs on defense and two kills on offense. Brionna Daniels added six digs.
Taylor Grayson had six kills and five service points for Mechanicville (8-5, 10-5), and Cialeigh Lyons added five service points and nine assists.
Brackets for the Section 2 girls soccer playoffs were announced Monday, Oct. 15, and two Suburban Council teams were among the five No. 1 seeds.
Bethlehem received the No. 1 seed in Class AA after winning the Blue Division title, while Averill Park claimed the No. 1 seed in Class A after finishing first in the Gray Division. Colonial Council champion Academy of the Holy Names (Class B), Wasaren League champion Stillwater (Class C) and Adirondack League runner-up Fort Ann (Class D) were the other three No. 1 seeds.
