Wasaren League boys basketball: Hoosic Valley defeats Cambridge at home

Hoosic Valley went on a 13-5 run in the third quarter to take the lead and held on for a 46-38 victory over Cambridge Friday, Jan. 18, in a Wasaren League boys basketball game in Schaghticoke.

Wasaren League boys basketball: A big second quarter propels Tamarac past Spa Catholic

Tamarac outscored Saratoga Central Catholic 24-10 in the second quarter to pull away for a 74-52 victory over the Saints Friday, Jan. 11, in a Wasaren League boys basketball game.

Brandon Napoli netted 18 points, and Anthony Ciampolillo contributed 12 points for Tamarac (5-2 league, 8-3 overall). Dan Honsinger was one of two players to score nine points for the Bengals, but it was his defensive work that made the difference as he limited Spa Catholic’s leading scorer, Jordan Catone, to two points.

Wasaren League boys basketball: Tamarac continues its upward trajectory with victory over Mechanicville

After winning three games in 2017-18, the Tamarac boys basketball team continued its ascent of the Wasaren League standings with a 70-63 victory over Mechanicville Friday, Jan. 4.

Jacob DeFreest led five players in double digits with 17 points for the Bengals, who improved to 4-1 in the league and 7-2 overall. Dalton Maxon had a double-double with 11 points and 18 rebounds, while Bo Catherwood and Frank Zotto each added 13 points. Anthony Ciampolillo chipped in with 11 points.

Whitehall girls basketball defeats Saratoga Central Catholic in defensive battle

Defense was the name of the game Friday, Dec. 21, as Whitehall defeated Saratoga Central Catholic 34-24 in a non-league girls basketball contest.

After a sluggish first quarter, Whitehall outscored Saratoga Catholic 13-7 in the second quarter to grab the lead. Both teams continued to struggle getting shots to fall in the second half, but the Railroaders pulled away at the end for the 10-point victory.

Boys basketball: Mechanicville defeats Cohoes, Hoosic Valley edges Galway in non-league contests

Mechanicville built a 19-point lead by the end of the third quarter and cruised to a 61-49 victory over Cohoes Thursday, Dec. 20, in a non-league boys basketball game.

Nick Billert scored 16 points, and Devin Garland contributed 11 points for Mechanicville, which held a 31-20 halftime lead. Ivan Brajac netted 13 points, and Troy Snyder added 12 points for Cohoes.

In another non-league contest involving a Wasaren League team, Hoosic Valley defeated Galway 33-30. Isaac Carlo and Zach Ryan each scored nine points to lead Hoosic Valley in a defensive struggle. Mike Sowle had 10 points for Galway.

Wasaren League boys basketball: Frank Zotto’s big second half propels Tamarac past Greenwich

Frank Zotto scored 22 of his team-high 29 points in the second half to lead Tamarac to a 75-71 victory over Greenwich Friday, Dec. 14, in a Wasaren League boys basketball game.

Zotto scored 13 points in the third quarter alone to help the Bengals erase a two-point halftime deficit. Jacob DeFreest contributed seven points during the surge and finished with 17 points.

Wasaren League boys basketball: Tamarac pulls away from Waterford-Halfmoon

The Tamarac boys basketball team equaled its win total from last year by defeating Waterford-Halfmoon 78-58 Wednesday, Dec. 12, in a Wasaren League game.

The Bengals (3-0) went on a 20-4 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Fordians (2-3). Jacob DeFreest scored nine points during the spurt and finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for Tamarac.

Frank Zotto also scored 17 points for the Bengals, while Dalton Maxon contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bo Catherwood scored 12 points in the first half and finished with 16 points for the game.

Brooke Pickett, Stillwater lead the way in state girls soccer postseason honors

After winning its first NYSPHSAA girls soccer title, Stillwater cleaned up when the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS) announced its year-end All-State teams this week.

Brooke Pickett was named Class C Player of the Year, and Christina Ihnatolya was chosen as the Class C Coach of the Year by a panel of sportswriters and coaches from across New York. Pickett was instrumental in leading the Lady Warriors to an undefeated season, as she led all of Section 2 with 52 goals.

Section 2 wrestling: Saratoga Springs wins Mohonasen Invitational; Coxsackie-Athens places second at Ossining tourney

Saratoga Springs had 10 wrestlers place in the top four of their weight classes to win the Mohonasen Invitational Saturday, Dec. 1, in Rotterdam.

Three Blue Streaks won in the championship finals, and three more earned victories in the consolation bracket finals to help Saratoga finish with 218.5 points. Maple Hill was second with 169 points, and Mohonasen placed third with 152.5 points.

Kyle Griskowitz (99 pounds), Brant Robinson (195) and Doug Cooper (215) won their weight classes for Saratoga. Griskowitz defeated Fonda-Johnstown’s Dylan Cotter 8-2 in the championship finals, while Robinson earned a technical fall over Colonie’s Colby Mattice. Cooper pinned Lansingburgh’s Y’lonte Jones Richards 17 seconds into the second round of their finals match. Stillwater’s Brooke Pickett named Wasaren League girls soccer Offensive Player of the Year; all-star teams revealed

The Wasaren League girls soccer coaches named Stillwater’s Brooke Pickett the Offensive Player of the Year and Mechanicville’s Ryleigh Hopeck as Defensive Player of the Year when they revealed their all-star teams.

Pickett, a sophomore, led Section 2 in goals scored (52) as she helped Stillwater claim the Class C state title this season. Hopeck was part of a Mechanicville defensive unit that was one of the stingiest in the league.
