A look back at the Section 2 Cross Country Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS – One race lived up to its pre-event billing, while another showdown never materialized at Friday’s Section 2 Cross Country Championships at a soggy Saratoga Spa State Park.

The Class A boys race turned into a battle royale between Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs, with the Plainsmen pulling out a three-point victory over the Blue Streaks, 60-63. Saratoga had two of the top four runners in the race, but Shen’s pack mentality proved to be the deciding factor.

Wasaren League announces its girls volleyball all-star teams

The Wasaren League girls volleyball coaches announced their Most Valuable Player and all-star team selections Thursday, Nov. 1.

Wasaren League announces boys soccer all-stars

Mechanicville’s Jeff Luce was named the most valuable offensive player, and teammate Justin Pugliese was selected as the most valuable defensive player by the Wasaren League boys soccer coaches when they announced the league’s all-star teams Saturday, Oct. 27.

Luce currently leads all Section 2 offensive players with 33 goals, to go along with eight assists. Pugliese led a Mechanicville defense that allowed a total of 20 goals this season, including seven shutouts.

Cambridge’s Parker Robertson was named the Wasaren League’s most valuable goalkeeper. The junior stopped 83 percent of the shots he faced to help the Indians finish with a 7-7-2 record. Continue reading “Wasaren League announces boys soccer all-stars”

Section 2 girls volleyball: Tamarac, Stillwater and Catskill among Class C teams advancing through opening round

The opening round of the Section 2 Class C and Class D girls volleyball tournaments took place Wednesday, Oct. 24.

In Class C, most of the higher seeds won their opening round matches. The exceptions were No. 12 Greenville (15-4) and No. 10 Tamarac (9-6). Greenville edged No. 5 Saratoga Central Catholic 3-2, while Tamarac swept No. 7 Hudson 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23.

No. 3 Stillwater (13-2), No. 4 Catskill (19-0), No. 6 Albany Academy for Girls (7-8) and No. 8 Canajoharie/Fort Plain (7-3) all won their opening round matches. Stillwater defeated No. 14 Chatham 3-0 to advance into the quarterfinals against Albany Academy for Girls, which defeated No. 11 Loudonville Christian 3-1. Catskill swept No. 13 Taconic Hills 3-0, and Canajoharie/Fort Plain defeated No. 9 Mechanicville 3-0. Section 2 girls volleyball seedings are announced

Shenendehowa (AA), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (A), Broadalbin-Perth (B), Voorheesville (C) and Galway (D) are the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes for the 2018 Section 2 girls volleyball tournament.

Section 2 football playoffs: Semifinal match-ups set in all five classes

Semifinal match-ups are set for all five classes in Section 2 football, as well as the final round of crossover games. Here is a look at who’s playing, and how they got there.

Class AA – All semifinal games Friday, Oct. 26
No. 1 Shaker (8-0) vs. No. 4 Guilderland (5-3)
How they got there: Shaker capped an undefeated regular season by defeating crosstown rival Colonie 31-7, while Guilderland clinched the No. 4 seed by pulling away for a 41-19 victory over Christian Brothers Academy (3-5) Friday, Oct. 19. Guilderland’s victory avoided a four-way tie for fourth place, as both Bethlehem (4-4) and Niskayuna (4-4) won their final regular season games

No. 2 Shenendehowa (7-1) vs. No. 3 Saratoga Springs (6-2)
How they got there: Shen wrapped up the No. 2 seed by defeating Saratoga 35-7 at home. Brendan Belott threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Shen to victory. Section 2 Class D girls soccer playoffs: Mekeel Christian, Whitehall win opening round games

No. 8 Mekeel Christian Academy and No. 7 Whitehall advanced to the Section 2 Class D girls soccer quarterfinals with opening round victories Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Mekeel Christian dispatched No. 9 Heatly 6-2 at Maalwyck Park in Scotia. Michaela Van Slyck recorded a hat trick and an assist for the Lions, while Mia Biscossi, Bella Biscossi and Madison Show all adding goals. Bella Biscossi also had an assist, as did Bella Harrigan, Olivia Bowman and Jo Galarneau. Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs: Catholic Central, Schoharie among teams advancing past preliminary round

No. 17 Catholic Central and No. 13 Schoharie were among six teams advancing through the preliminary round of the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Lucas Kania had a hat trick to lead Catholic Central (5-12-0) to a 7-1 victory over No. 16 Saratoga Central Catholic. Liam McDonald contributed a pair of goals, and Joe Piperata added a goal and two assists for the Crusaders, who will meet top-seeded Lake George Thursday, Oct. 18.

Section 2 girls soccer playoffs: Bethlehem, Averill Park, Holy Names, Stillwater and Fort Ann are top seeds

Brackets for the Section 2 girls soccer playoffs were announced Monday, Oct. 15, and two Suburban Council teams were among the five No. 1 seeds.

Bethlehem received the No. 1 seed in Class AA after winning the Blue Division title, while Averill Park claimed the No. 1 seed in Class A after finishing first in the Gray Division. Colonial Council champion Academy of the Holy Names (Class B), Wasaren League champion Stillwater (Class C) and Adirondack League runner-up Fort Ann (Class D) were the other three No. 1 seeds.

Section 2 boys soccer playoff seedings are set

Christian Brothers Academy (Class AA), Queensbury (A), Schalmont (B), Lake George (C) and Fort Ann (D) are the No. 1 seeds in this year’s Section 2 boys soccer playoffs.

CBA earned the No. 1 seed after posting the best record in the Suburban Council (12-1-1 league, 13-1-1 overall). The Brothers – along with No. 2 Albany (11-2-1, 12-2-1), No. 3 Bethlehem (10-3-1, 12-3-1) and No. 4 Shenendehowa (10-3-1, 10-3-1) – received byes through the first round.

Queensbury (15-1-0), No. 2 Albany Academy (11-5-0), No. 3 Averill Park (6-8-2), No. 4 South Glens Falls (10-6-0) and No. 5 Mohonasen (9-5-2) all received byes in Class A.
