GLENS FALLS – Joseph Girard III would not be denied by Schalmont again.
JG3 poured in 52 points to lead Glens Falls to a 77-56 victory over Schalmont in the Section 2 Class B boys basketball final Friday, March 1, at the Cool Insuring Arena.
The Sabres built a 14-6 lead in the first quarter, but once Girard warmed up, there was little that they could do to stop him. The Syracuse University-bound senior guard nailed seven three-pointers and made 15 of his 16 free throws to help the Indians pull away for the 21-point victory and their second Sectional title in three years.

GLENS FALLS – Joseph Girard III continues to do whatever it takes to guide the Glens Falls boys basketball team to a Section 2 championship.
JG3 dropped 66 points on Watervliet to lead Glens Falls to an 88-70 victory over the Cannoneers in the Class B semifinals Monday, Feb. 25, at Cool Insuring Arena. Girard made 17 of his 37 shots from the field, including eight three-pointers, and he sank 24 out of his 25 free throws to lead the Indians to Friday’s final against Schalmont.
Messiah Mallory and J.J. Chestnut did what they could to keep Watervliet in the game. Mallory led the Cannoneers with 28 points, and Chestnut sank four three-pointers on his way to a 22-point night. Ichabod Crane senior midfielder Anthony Carlucci received his second consecutive first team recognition when the United Soccer Coaches announced its All-New York boys soccer team Friday, Dec. 14.
Carlucci was named to the small schools division (classes B, C and D) first team after putting together a strong 2018 campaign, in which he scored 16 goals in leading the Riders to the Section 2 Class B final. Lake George outscored Hartford 42-15 in the second half to pull away for an 80-38 victory over the Tanagers Tuesday, Dec. 4, in an Adirondack League boys basketball game.
Chris Becker and Luke Pelchar each recorded double-doubles for Lake George. Becker led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Pelchar chipped in with 11 points and 12 boards. Juan Garcia contributed 10 points, and Alex Leonelli added six assists.
Gavin Darfler had 13 points and seven rebounds for Hartford, and Brandon Harrington netted nine points.

Outlook for season: Lake George lost its leading scorer (Scrime) and its starting point guard (Jones) to graduation, but the Warriors have two strong scorers returning in Flatley and Becker, who each averaged 15 points per game, plus a promising shooting guard in Vidnansky.
“The culture here is to win league titles and Sectionals, which is our goal again this season,” said White. “With the core being the two big men inside [Flatley and Becker], we feel with the new starters, we will have a balanced unit.”
The top four seeds in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs advanced to the semifinal round with quarterfinal victories Monday, Oct. 22.
No. 1 Lake George (18-0-0) got past No. 8 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 3-1, as Alex Leonelli, Ethan Knauf and Justin Blanco tallied for the Warriors. The quarterfinal field is set in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs following Thursday’s opening round.
No. 6 Greenwich (9-6-2) dispatched No. 22 Canajoharie 8-2 in Greenwich. The Cougars (2-14-2) got on the scoreboard first on Walfre Vasquez’s goal three minutes into the first half, but the Witches scored eight unanswered goals to end Canajoharie’s upset bid.
Charlie Gartner recorded a hat trick, and Liam Kelleher contributed a goal and an assist for Greenwich. AJ Rymph, Bill Bink, Hunter Dixson and Connor Smith also tallied for the Witches.
